While in Newport this past weekend, my wife and I decided to try out a bed and breakfast. We had never stayed at one in the past so we figured it would be a fun new adventure. Little did I know, it turned out to be such a great experience! Even from the initial phone call to inquire about a vacancy, Romana (the owner and hostess) was delightful and full of energy. Any nervous feelings about staying in a stranger's home immediately left me.
Upon our arrival, Romana greeted us enthusiastically and showed us around the house, outlining amenities and house rules, which were very helpful for us first-timers. She even gave us great tips about navigating Newport, local attractions, restaurants, and, most importantly, parking. The house was very well-kept and maintained. Our room was comfortable and clean. It was made more evident by the fact that, as a person with allergies to cat dander, I had no reactions whatsoever being in the house despite Romana owning two friendly felines. The outdoor porch was inviting and relaxing, a great spot to wind down from a day of exploration, or to enjoy the wonderful weather.
Additionally, the location is perfect as it's within a healthy walking distance of the cliff walk, mansions, and the downtown Newport area along the wharf. We were no further than 15-20 minutes walking of any location we wanted to visit. It was nice and quiet on the block, and had a calming secluded feeling, which is a huge contrast to the bustling nightlife by the wharf.
Finally, the breakfast was unbelievable. We enjoyed great banter with the other guests of the house, which we had not anticipated. It was lively and full of laughs that served as a great start to our day! As for the food, I thought that my dairy intolerance might pose an issue to traditional breakfast foods. Romana certainly did not make me feel as such. The three-course breakfast was absolutely delicious! Even my main course of scrambled eggs was astounding - some of the best I've ever had.
Overall, Armistead Cottage enhanced our overall experience while visiting Newport and we most certainly stay there again if we ever venture back out into that area!
