We left the hotel after one night of a three night stay. There is no air conditioning at all, just a ceiling fan. On the 6th floor you need AC even in SF-- and we were there during a heat wave. The room was sweltering. The street noise easily penetrated the double pane windows-- racing motorcycles, boom box, street people yelling. We had a connecting room and we could hear the person in the next room snoring, their radio and even sneezes. The bathroom was so small you couldn't stand squarely in front of the tiny sink because the toilet was in the way. The walk-in closet had no light and no door.

Every member of the staff was delightful however and the lobby cafe serves delicious coffee and croissants.

Sadly, the upgrade from the old Mark Twain Hotel to the new Tilden cut some critical corners.

There are some things that are great about Tilden Hotel. Cleanliness, the wifi, the hummingbird garden, the beds, food at the hotel bar, most of the staff...

And some things are pretty bad. While there have been some renovations, this is a very old building and it shows. Plenty of dust and rust. But the most bothersome is the standard old building smell. The air in the room is stale and musty.

And yes, the neighborhood is bad. You should know this when you're making a reservation here, so it's hard to deduct points for it. But doesn't change the fact that there will be yelling and screaming outside your window. A peaceful sleep is unlikely.

Bottomline is that this is not a 4 star hotel, as other reviewers said. Yes, certain bits feel 4 star-like, but poetry on my pillow doesn't change the fact that my room smells like a gym bag.

My family and I stayed at the Tilden for a weekend trip to SF. The hotel was nice, clean, and cozy with a modern vibe. For the 4 of us, the room was borderline snug and the bathroom was small compared to those in the large hotel chains but the trip was short and we were mostly out exploring the city so it was doable. The hotel was conveniently located in Union Square, around the corner from the start of the cable car route. The hotel staff was very pleasant and helpful. There is a small cafe in the hotel that offered pastries as well and there was no shortage of restaurant choices nearby. There was also a bar in the hotel which unfortunately, we were not able to check out. Next time...

Room tip: Windows are the source of airflow - noise level from the street can get a little high. Ask hotel staff for alternatives.

This is an old hotel with a new face, which is standard in the Tenderloin district. Very friendly staff and if you need a location close to Union Square, this is it. The rooms were quaint with a modern design. They have two types of rooms which I will call inboard (no view) and outboard (view). The gym is very small, but it has what you need and I grabbed and yoga mat to work out in the spacious hallway. Also, check out the Koi Garden while you're at the gym. Minor issues are the reception quality of the TV, then again it did not matter much since I only used it to catch the news while getting ready to explore the city. Make sure you check out the bar attached to the hotel and the coffee in the pastry shop near the front desk is free. Each room has a safe, refrigerator, iron and hairdryer. YES, you're in the heart of Tenderloin District, it's San Francisco so please don't allow this to deter you from a great experience.

Room tip: Ask for an outer room.

The rooms are small but clean and pleasant, the bathrooms are sometimes too small to be properly functional - in one room we had a sink so small water splashed all over the floor. The closets are open to the room and sometimes don't have light switches in them. The lobby is very pleasant and comfortable. The small elevator was broken one day and stairs are steep and narrow. The biggest issue is the noise from adjacent rooms - through the walls and connecting door you can hear every little thing from the room next door. One day it was a loud phone conversation, another day it was a couple fighting. It literally was like having these people in the same room - not just muffled noise. I won't return to this hotel for that reason. Prices are high for what it offers and they need to fix the noise problem.

Room tip: All rooms have paper thin walls and every noise from room next door is heard clearly.

Greetings,

We understand the issues you have faced during your stay. I hope that some of our agents offered a choice of moving to other rooms in case of persistent noise from neighbors. We are attempting some long term solutions to negate some of the noise and lighting problems so we can provide exemplary accommodations for all our guests.

Thank you for sharing your experience.
