I was in the area on a hunting trip, and we spent a few hours in town one afternoon. We never would have found this place, but one of the locals pointed us here. It's in the courtyard of the Karoo Trade. Nice little bar.

Thank you for the positive feedback, we hope you had a great time in the Karoo.
We are busy working on the signage for the GRT Brewery to ensure that is clearly visible from the main road.
We hope to see you back in Graaff-Reinet soon.
Kind Regards
GRT Brewery

The GRT Brewery is situated off the back courtyard in the new Karoo Trade complex which is next door to the Desert Springs Spur in Church street and just down from the Dutch Reformed Church. The building was apparently part of an old coach house. There is comfortable seating indoors which is air conditioned and also a nice outdoor area where one can sit on the cooler days. During our visit the temperatures were over 40 degrees so the indoor air conditioned area was an oasis after a hot day visiting Nieu Bethesda. At present there are three beers in their range namely the GRT Ale which is a Golden Ale the Red Ale which is a Red Irish style Ale and the Black IPA which is a lighter style Black Ale. The brewing process is not automated and is done by hand in small micro brewery tanks which means that each batch will be unique as it is difficult to achieve exact batches each time. Ingredients are scoured locally as far as is possible. We tried all of the beers and the Black IPA and the Red Ale were both very good. There is also a selection of wines and artisan style spirits available such as infused gins. The owner Barry was a great host and we even got some labels for our beer scrap book. Good well priced food is available from the adjacent MeerKat Deli. A worthwhile must stop in Graaff Reinet for fresh tasty beer.

A lovely setting in the square surrounded by art and a few stores. We went at 6pm so stores were closed. Had a quick beer and bought more to take home.

So unexpected but a great find on the main street of G.R. Three good craft beers on tap and the young owner and his wife made you feel so welcome. It tends to close early during the week, around 7.00pm, but on the occasion of our visit the hostess was glad to make my wife and I an evening meal before they closed. Very good of them.

When we passed through Graaff Reinet recently, we were delighted to discover the charming centre (just 1 block from the Church), called Karoo Trade, which houses GRT Brewery, amongst a host of other Karoo orientated Shops.
Of course, in the heat of the day, we were after a nice cold beer to drink.
What a pleasure it was, sitting in the air-conditioned bar with lovely comfortable seating, whilst sipping on absolutely great beer!!!!
They have 3 varieties of crafted beer to choose from as well as some very interesting wines and spirits.
The owner kindly offered us a tour of the Brewery itself - very interesting!!
Also we were able to have a delicious meal from the Deli, served to us in the bar.
A real oasis in the desert!!!!!
