We've been on a diner kick recently, and visited the Walnut Bottom Diner about 3-4 times for dinner. The service has always been excellent; quick and friendly. As we entry, there's a large whiteboard with the specials, On our most recent visit, one of the...specials was roast 1/2 chicken, exactly what I had been craving. It came with soup or salad, plus two sides. I like their soups; that night they included turkey rice or bwwf vegetable. Turkey rice would have been a good accompaniment to my roast chicken, but their beef vegetable is excellence. What sides? The usual assortment of potatoes ; mashed, fried, etc, but I am not a fan of potatoes. I chose stuffing (AKA filling), with gravy, and coleslaw. Hubby got the Walnut Bottom Breakfast, a HUGE two-platter assortment of all the traditionals, and coffee which was so strong I could smell it. My soup was excellent. I have tried to replicate it at home, but so far I haven't quite succeeded. I wanted herbal tea but they didnt have any, so I just ordered hot water and used my own teabag, Then the coleslaw. Very finally grated rather than shredded, but the dressing was light and quite nice. And that chicken! large, brown, and crispy, oh so crispy. Our server said he had been serving those chickens all evening, and he was going to get one for himself. I think if I'd come into the diner while the Chickens were roasting I'd have swooned from the aroma. The 1/2 chicken was presented atop a mound of stuffing; I needn't have ordered it separately. It was delicious. The crispy skin had been sprinkled and rubbed with a secret blend of herbs and spices and was gooooooddddd! The chicken meat was moist and tender. The filling....well, I should have remembered from a previous meal, their stuffing is an odd combo of traditional bread cube and celery stuffing, and mashed potatoes; I picked at it and the bites of traditional bread and celery stuffing were like Thanksgiving, but the mashed potatoes turned it all into mush. I ate half of my half chicken, maybe 1/3 of the mushy filling, and had two small syrupy bites of hubby's French toast for dessert. A delicious meal, with leftover chicken and filling. 4 stars not 5 because of the mushy potatoey filling.More
