A great experience. The food was tremendous and the service was very friendly. A nice place to dine.

Average food, not very cheap. Good enough to non-Asian customer. We have visited for lunch, have combo box and other. The conclusion of our lunch, the restaurant did not use Japanese rice instead of Chinese rice to make sushi. People who eat sushi all knows...the rice is good or not affected the quality of Japanese dishes. Plus, the waitress ordered wrong dish for me. But I am okay to take it anyway. This is detail training issue of restaurant.More
HANAMI is, hands down, my husband's favorite restaurant. The ingredients used in the sushi dishes especially are incredibly fresh each time we visit. Also of particular note is the fact that the menu changes several times a year, to celebrate various holidays and events. We...thoroughly enjoyed two hand rolls, the Pee-A-Boo and the Casper, designed to bring us into the season of Halloween. Soups (maybe Miso?), salads (maybe Avacado?) or an appetizer (maybe Gyoza?) are always a great way to anticipate the main rolls you may choose. On a rare occasion when we saved room for a dessert, Green Tea Mochi was a light compliment to all the other flavors we experienced.More
I was disappointed with my dinner at this restaurant. It wasn’t bad, not it did not do justice to the high ratings and accolades the restaurant has. The sushi was as good as sushi from a supermarket (and not as good as sushi from some...supermarkets). The place is clean, the service is good. Staff is cordial and professional.More
It is very difficult to get a good meal in this section of Baltimore Avenue, across from the Univ. of Maryland. On our last day of a week here, we finally found a reasonable option. This small, quaint restaurant is simple, clean, and offers a...nice selection of Japanese cuisine. Our server was pleasant and efficient. The sashimi and sushi, and other items we ordered, were delicious. And the chocolate lava cake, not obviously a Japanese item, was quite good. The price was reasonable. The restaurant is popular and though reservations are not normally recommended, on this Friday night we were glad that we had reserved a table.More
I tried a Hanami roll, hotate, botan ebi, and unagi. Overall, the quality was alright but nothing more than that.
Went there for a birthday dinner with family. Very casual environment as one would expect right near to University of Maryland campus. No reservation needed, they had plenty of free tables Sunday evening. Very fast service, friendly staff, tasty food. Prices were reasonable, especially for...the box dinner combinations which had a variety of options (sushi, sashimi, tempura, teriaki, etc.).More
Great place to get sushi in the area! The restaurant is a cute place to hang out, even with a sushi bar. Ordering online is easy, and if you live close enough, they deliver. What I've tried from there never disappoints! The UMD roll is...so good! Being an aluminum Terp, I had to try it! Being an anime fan, the Dragon Ball is worth the price! My husband gets the sashimi platter, which came with rice at the restaurant, but was without when we ordered take-out, something I don't understand, but the taste of the fish was superior to other sashimi platters we've had elsewhere. The eel rolls are good if you have a taste for eel, not many do. The California rolls and vegetable rolls are good too. The udon soup is tasty, but their miso soup has amazing flavor! Definitely worth a try! This is definitely our new fave sushi place!More
Been coming here 1-3 times each month since we moved here in 1994. We lived in northern Japan twice in the 70s and 80s. This place continues to 'do the area and country justice'. Right next to University of Maryland. If you like small and...neat Japanese sushi (and regular Japanese menu) places, you Need to seek out this gem.More
Went here after a long day in downtown DC. Happy find! Everybody was happy and service was great. Sushi and hibachi were delicious. Definitely recommend!
It's a pretty and intimate Japanese restaurant with good lunch specials. There is a Japanese curry that is not on the menu which is my husbands favorite...not at all like Thai curry. He's not crazy about their sushi, says the rice is a little too...sweet but I don't notice it. Their Bento boxes are good but their cooked protein sometimes comes with too much sauce. I've had better sushi and tempura at other small restaurants but, that said, I still like coming here. Tasty. Servers are very nice.More
My 17 year old son and I came here after a long day of college tours and traveling and were not disappointed. The food was tasty and the portions were large. Service was VERY fast. The udon noodle bowl was huge, and came with an...appetizer. Good price, had much leftover. The dinner box was also a ton of food - rolls, shumai, tempura, teriyaki, rice, a salad and miso soup!More
The food is ok but does not make up for the very poor service. This restaurant has a higher rating than it deserves based on our experience tonight
Authentic Japanese food served by friendly staff. Sushi especially fresh and nicely presented. add one hundred characters
When I travel alone, I invariably try all the nearby restaurants that serve Thai-themed food. When I find those establishments, I nearly always try their Chicken Pad Thai. If the establishment makes a good Pad Thai, I'll return to try other menu options. The Pad...Thai at Hanami was unusual (to me) because it didn't have the usual orange/reddish color. It was whitish and moderately seasoned which, from a Google search, isn't uncommon for the Northeast US. It came covered in crushed peanuts (nice) but lacked color from any brightly-colored vegetables, and lacked the crisp crunch of bean sprouts. Overall, it was barely okay, not at all great, not good enough for me to try another dish on another day. I also try the Thai Ice Tea wherever I go. The Thai Ice Tea at Hanami was much, much too weak. I thought they had just added too much condensed milk, so I asked my server to top-off the glass with just the Thai tea, hoping it would give it the usual taste of Thai tea. But when that finally happened -- after I finished my meal -- the Thai tea was just as bland and tasteless as before, lacking the deep orange color it ought to have. But the service! Egads, it was really poor tonight! I was greeted by a friendly server, but that was the last, positive interaction I had with their wait staff. After I was served my Pad Thai (where I asked the server to top-off my Thai tea), the server never returned to check on me (or refill my Thai tea). I finished my entire meal without my server checking on me. Then, a bus boy quietly dropped off my bill (I was going to order a dessert, but, I guess not). He, too, never asked if I needed anything, or even if I was finished with my meal. I left the bill on the table untouched so I could remind my server that I wanted my Thai tea topped-off. When she finally passed by me, it was only to retrieve my bill (I hadn't yet looked at it). So, I reminded her about my Thai tea refill. She went to do that, and when I opened my bill, it was for another table -- with their credit card inside! They took that bill away from me -- but never brought me my actual bill. Sheesh! When I finally got that mix-up ironed out, I paid my bill and left. Everyone there kinda ignored me, never thanked me for coming, never asked me how my meal was. The small dining area was more than half-full. I guess a lot of people like their food. They're sure not coming for ambiance or to be attended to by a friendly, thoughtful staff.More
