We needed a hotel in Aflao during a business trip and looked at a minimum of five of which one was more terrible than the other. When we arrived at Vilcabamba, we were finally relieved to find a decent place. The hotel is in a really quiet residential area, far away from any noisy streets. It feels more like a beach resort than a business hotel with each of the rooms having its own terrace. It is actually quite close to the beach but avoid going there as it is used as the public toilet. The rooms were clean, have an average size and decent light, AC functioning. The mattress is softer than in most Ghanaian hotels. Bathrooms were entirely okay, although maintenance has been neglected a bit (nothing serious). The surroundings are really spacious and probably well suited for energetic kids (even though there is nothing kids specific). The restaurant certainly needs some refurbishment. Staff are willing to address your non-menu wishes but it took them ages to deliver; portions were very generous.…
While on a business trip to Lome, Togo I encountered some problems with my visa and had to put in an unplanned overnight stay as close as possible to the Togolese border. After checking and rejecting various Hotels at Aflao, the border town, I was advised to try Hotel Vilcabamba at Denu, the next town to Aflao. A ten minute drive from the border I reached the Hotel and was immediately enchanted with the nice and neat appearance, while the pricing for an A/C room seemed too good to be true - only about 250.000 Cedis or roughly 30 USD. The receptionist proved very helpful and even saw to it that in spite of the late hour- 23:30 - I was served a cold drink and some delicious food from the restaurant - again the prices seemed incredibly low, about 4 USD for two beers and a club sandwich with a fresh salad and chips. The room was impeccably clean, the bed comfortable and I had a very good rest after a stressful day. Early the next morning I decided to go for a stroll at the beach, which is only 3 minutes walking distance. The sound of the surf at night probably helped me to sleep better. In lieu of my habitual exercise, I opted for a tug of war, trying to help the fishermen to haul in their net on the beach. Only those who have tried this before can appreciate the hard job these people are having! Once the catch was hauled in I was offered some fish as my share and decided to have some of it. Back at the Hotel it was no problem to have the fish prepared within a short time for a minimal fee, though the cook had already prepared a delicious omelet for me. The only disturbing part was the terrible sweet white bread, probably just the choice of an American or British tourist, but I could not eat that with a spiced meal. I checked out and went to Lome, having resolved my visa issues and then, being a Saturday, decided to go back to the same Hotel in the evening instead of driving back to Accra at night. Travelers advice: Try to avoid traveling at night anywhere in Ghana unless you are a suicide candidate! Sunday morning I repeated my morning exercise and was greeted with welcoming shouts "Yawu, wa"(whiteman come) by the fishermen. This time I was given a bunch of crabs and langoustines, which the cook transformed into one of the best seafood platters I ever had in my life. All in all a very pleasant stay and quite a gourmet experience! Very recommendable for families with children, as the locals are extremely friendly and there is a lot of space in the Hotel.…
