We came up to stay a couple of nights before and after the wonderful tramp to Fletchers Bay. Sure, it’s a bit pricier than the usual DOC campsite, but it’s utterly worth it. We were staying in Henry’s Hill which had brand new ablution blocks and a cold shower. Herds of sheep and friendly ducks wandering around. Thought I’d landed in paradise. Much nicer than Fletchers Bay campsite if you are going to do the tramp.

Although a bit of a trek to get to the drive itself has brilliant views and scenery. Then you arrive at the Stony Bay campsite a bay and beach with lots of green grass to park up on with views out to sea. When we were there in mid January there was only a handful of other campers. It is one of DOCs more expensive sites but I assume this is to do with its isolation. There are cold showers - great for when you hop out the sea! And in Mid Jan didn't even feel that cold.

$180 for one week with my two kids..... really.... they supply nothing and were rude and accused us of not paying for a night when i paid cash and as i had no change i actually paid more than i had to. Total rip off as DOC takes our tax than rips us off by making us pay $180 for one week to stay on our land..... this is NZ and they are ruining the Kiwi summer holiday... lazy rip off people DOC have become... this is my favorite beach and DOC are ruining it...

My wife and I went there in Oct this year. I think its over rated and so did one other couple I talked too. Doc told me its not their peak season so They don't look after the site as much. The grass was over grown there was recycling there from their last peak season. Don't get me wrong it is a nice spot, very tight road to get into the site with some blind corners. Awesome place if you want to get away from everything, bush walks, fishing or just reading a book. But I think Doc are a bit cheeky charging people a full rate for camping for a site run down when there is a heap of free freedom camping spots in the Coromandel
