I booked in for 2 nights here as a solo female traveller. I had confirmation emails etc. as proof that I had booked a single room - I arrived at the hostel around 6.20pm on a Friday to find I had been placed in a large mixed dorm. The guy on the front desk was polite but totally unhelpful apparently under instruction from his manager. I offered to take any of the female dorms but was told all were sold out. I could not take the bed offered by them in the large mixed dorm, and they offered no like for like alternative. I was told that if i cancelled my stay/didn't check in I would lose my full amount paid as it was outside the cancellation period - they didn't grasp that within the cancellation period I was getting the room I booked, so it wasn't a cancellation on my behalf and was instead them not supplying what was purchased. I wasted so much time here to be offered no help while going through hotels.com customer support - I eventually gave up at 9:30pm when my employer forked out for a bed in another hotel for me. Hotels.com were meant to get a full refund for me, as they failed to uphold their part of the sale, but 2.5 weeks later I've had or heard nothing from the hostel. To pay for something which is totally unavailable, with no budge room and no option for a refund, is a total scam. Do not book here as a solo female traveller as you will not be respected or safe.

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and disappointment you encountered during your recent stay at our hostel. We fully understand how important it is to have safe and comfortable accommodations, especially for solo female travelers. It is deeply regrettable that we failed to provide you with the room you had booked, and for any misunderstandings that occurred during your interaction with our front desk staff. Because you booked through a third-party site, Hotels.com is responsible for providing you with your refund. Once again, we extend our sincerest apologies for the inconvenience caused and thank you for bringing these issues to our attention. Your feedback helps us improve our services and strive for a better experience for all our guests. Sincerely, Amsterdam Hostel Management

Great hostel. The room was very clean with nice decoration. Every bed has its own drawer where you can place your suitcase and luggage with a padlock. The kitchen and common areas are very nice with good space and a lot of places where you can charge your phone or whatever you need. Great location, you can walk to different places like union square.

The hostel is extremely affordable. We stayed in a double private room. Everything was prefect. The room was exceptionally clean. The bathroom was lovely and clean too. Even though it is small the space is used efficiently and gives a cosy vibe. The location is also perfect. We were a walking distance to Union Hall, Chinatown, and even Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf. The hostel was very close to cable car lines and buses for when you did not feel like walking. The reception was extremely helpful with all our questions! The only bad comment I have about this place is the noise. It can be a little noisy in the corridors with other guests banging doors or talking loudly. The cleaning staff can also be very noisy with cleaning in the mornings. However, this did not affect our sleep too much and was something we could sleep past. Another issue was not having a fridge in the room. There is a shared fridge in the shared kitchen but it would be nice to have a little mini fridge for yourself. Especially as the kitchen closes at 10pm and between 10-11am for cleaning.

Amsterdam Hotel is really central, but I do not recommend it for more than one night. The room has a smell of weed, and you can hear everybody in the building, and they can hear you. The cleaning was fine. So therefore only two stars.

We stayed in a private room. It was very clean with a super clean bathroom. Enough space for us with hanging space (more hangers would be good) and places to put bags. Large number of electrical sockets. Good shower with complimentary toiletries. Check in and out was quick and easy. Location was good for us. We were able to walk to most places we wanted to. There have been lots of negative reviews about this hostel. We didn't have the same experience. I think the hostel should respond more personally to the negative reviews rather than the standard copy and paste comment they leave. This would give a better impression. We would stay again

I've stayed in my fair share of "bad" hostels but I think this takes the cake. There was only 5 lockers in my room of a 6 bed room. And two of them were being used by one person so I had to just have my stuff out which did not make me feel safe AT all, especially walking in and seeing a sign about recent thefts/break-ins. I was told I had to check in at 3, and when I came back around 315, I was told to wait 10 minutes while they did a shift change. Then I was asked to pay a 10 dollar (refundable but still) fee for the room key that had to be in cash, and I don't carry cash really anytime but especially when I travel so it was a real pain this wasn't mentioned before hand at any point or on the website. The bed sheet they gave me did not fit at all, and the mattress had a HUGE red stain on it. The staff itself were really nice, but the accomodations are just not great. And it's in a very sketchy part of the city. You can't beat the price. I was paying about 20 bucks per night, but I've paid less at other hostels and have gotten way way more. Oh and also hot water that runs out after a 5 minute shower and a shower space that is literally 2 foot by 2 foot so you pretty much can only turn around in place. I'm also pretty sure our AC was broken. It read 65 but I was sweating profusely whenever I was in my room. Even on a 55 degree day in SF and the window open, it was so so hot. No handsoap in the bathrooms, dormmates who were up chatting with the overhead light on well past 11pm. Was never told about any kind of quiet hours upon arrival Which probably would have helped immensely in that situation. The towels they give you to shower with are like sandpaper. I understand you're paying a dirt cheap amount, but it was kind of ridiculous. There were hostels I stayed at in Europe that were cheaper and way way nicer. It's a decent walk from Bart and it's close to a lot of food and a Walgreens and such, so it:s not totally terrible, but I'd spend the extra money and stay elsewhere.

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are sorry to hear that you had trouble due to the lockers in the room. It isn't enjoyable to learn that the bed and mattress weren't in a proper condition. It would have been helpful if you had asked someone from the front desk to offer you new bedsheets. We apologize that you had trouble sleeping due to the heat in the room. We also apologize for the issue of noise you had to face and the towels that made you a bit uncomfortable. It would have been helpful if you had asked for new ones. Please understand that this isn't our best example of hospitality. We hope you had a pleasant visit to Walgreens and appreciate for informing other travelers about this minor update in your stay with us. Lastly, we ensure that all your issues will be resolved and such incidents won't be repeated from our side. Once again, please accept our sincere apologies for your experience. Sincerely, Amsterdam Hostel Management

My husband and I spent two nights here last week on our visit to the city and stayed in a four bed mixed dorm. The room (including the bathroom) itself was very clean, the shower was good and it was quiet enough to sleep (we were very lucky that our room mates on both nights were friendly and quiet). The check in process, however, wasn't all that smooth as they don't allocate beds meaning that we had to guess which ones were ours when we went into the room which was made difficult by their people other people's possessions on each one. The kitchen area is sizeable however the fridge really really really could do with a good clean as there were definitely bacterial growths forming in the bottom of it. My advice would be to definitely secure your food in a bag purely from a hygiene point of view! We were happy to be able to store our bags at the hostel before our late train out of the city in the evening. So overall a mixed experience but definitely a good budget option for a short stay in San Francisco (as long as you accept that it is a budget option so therefore very much a no frills experience!)
