We stayed recently at the Pine Valley Lodge. The cabin was disintegrating and dirty. We were aghast at what we walked into. What we found: there was a painted paper plate stuck on the wall partially covering a hole, dishes washed but stacked in the drain, an unwashed cookie sheet and spatula on top of the refrigerator, big sticky dried spill on a counter top, toilet bowl with a grey ring, the flooring in the kitchen and bathroom were peeling up, small piles of dirt here and there throughout the cabin, intricate brown water stains festooning the ceiling, the beds had deep valleys in the middle so you had to keep climbing out, the bed springs made a pinging sound through the night, toilet would not flush urine and a couple squares of TP in fact would only flush after waiting 12 hours or so, the microwave was resting on a thin board that was bowing to such a degree we were afraid to touch it for fear it would crash down, holes in the walls in the closet and bedroom. I am not sure who this rental would appeal to, it is pretty decrepit. We want to know - Who went to the effort of painting the paper plate after partially covering the hole in the wall? Is this considered a repair or part of a design?

You actually walked into and stayed at a cabin which was in process of renovation, you were supposed to rent the cabin next to it. I know that you rented our cabin in order to close up your pop-up trailer on a rainy weekend at nearby lake property. Wish we could have connected to get you to the correct cabin. You'll be glad to know the renovation has gone well for guests coming this summer 2019. George Schroepfer Owner/On-site Manager

Stayed here with family of 11 ages 76-1 at Heritage House in June. This seemed to be the nicest of the (9?) cabins, likely due to it having been the owners home until recently. That said, it still, like the rest of the resort, needs renovation. Its a nice enough rustic house, lots of space, nice enough (for Northwoods) furnishings (beds actually fairly comfy). Owners are super nice and accommodating but as other reviewers have stated, they need a small army (and a miracle) to get the rest of the resort up to snuff. The Good: Heritage house is roomy, comfy enough for up north, rustic stay. Beach is nice sized with sand out at least 20 feet until it gets mucky. Piers are sturdy, fishing for the kids off the piers was fun with lots of small bluegill to catch. Grounds were kept clean where people would be (although lots of clutter to the sides, see below). Owners are very nice people. Lots of cool history with the resort. The lake is great (fishing and boating/skiing). Rec Room/Bar has so much potential. The Bad: One other family was staying at Norway and had to be moved out due to CO2 leak. While I'm sure it would be fixed, this gives an idea of the general run down nature of the resort. Our house which while nice enough, had settling issues (resort is over 100 years old) resulting in large cracks all over. Minor repair needs required throughout. I saw the first floor of the large lodge and while spacious, it had serious settling problems (the entire kitchen is on a slant). Most of the grounds are clean, however the resort could do with a very solid de-junking to get rid of all the old broken down items cluttering the grounds and inside the rec room/bar. TLDR: Nice enough rustic Northwoods lodge if you can ignore the major renovations needed. Price is about right for what you get.

After staying here last year I have decided to share my experience. The owner George is a very nice man, however, he needs to invest some money in the resort. As a fisherman, boats and motors are important, when the motor broke George gave us his personal boat - which saved the day. But the fact that the only other motor didn't work was crazy - you can't run a resort by the seat of your pants. The cottage, well it was dry but in need of major updating, I would not bring my family to this resort. The potential is here but George needs a army to get this serviceable. When we told a local bartender where we were staying the first response was a wincing gasp and an "ohh, yeah that place needs work". If the onsite lodge /bar was redone as well as the cottages this place would be a Diamond in the Rough. Until that happens, look elsewhere.
