Lovely old hotel. Disappointed to be told on check in that breakfast wasn't until 9am, we had to leave by 8am, they did put a box outside our door with fruit and cereal in but not the same. Our room was at the front, and we actually left 11pm as it is right on a busy road and just couldn't sleep, the beds are very soft so my husband suffered with his back. That said nice place and people.

What a lovely place! The Old House is exactly that, an old – very old – house. This is reflected in the delightfully crooked walls, slanting floors, inglenook fireplaces and Jacobean oak panelling. Our room, the Garden Room, is a lovely, light room with comfortable beds (a single & a double), en-suite bathroom, and all the usual coffee/tea making facilities – but watch out for the step, both into the room from the landing and to the bathroom. The room has delightful views down the garden, to which guests also have access. Breakfast is served in the guests’ lounge / dining room where there is an enormous fireplace, comfortable settees, oak beams and panelling. A choice is offered from cereals and fruit juices, and also – highly recommended(!) - of ‘full English’ breakfast, the bacon and sausages thereon being sourced from a local butcher and of excellent quality. A vegetarian variation of the ‘full English’ is available, as is a continental. Sue, the owner, presides over the meal and ensures you get what you want, and happily talks knowledgably about Braintree and the surrounding places to see and visit, whilst topping up your coffee cups (tea and other beverages are also available). Bradford Street, on which the Old House is situated is like a time capsule, almost all the buildings being very – some times very very – old and, if you can catch it without too many parked cars, very picturesque. There is also a lovely Victorian park just behind the House which is well maintained and has a number of smaller areas within it to explore, as well as tennis courts for hire for the more energetic persons, it is easily accessible via a small gateway about ten yards to the right of the exit to the street (just beyond the mini roundabout). Braintree itself, along with shops, take-aways, pubs and restaurants is, conveniently, only a five minute walk away. Be warned though, tourist information doesn’t exist as such, though if you go out to the Freeport Retail Outlet, there is limited information available there. Neither of the museums open on Mondays, and even St Michaels church was firmly locked up (we were looking for sanctuary from the persistent, heavy, rain). We would very highly recommend the Old House should you be in the area. This was our first visit, and should we return we will have no hesitation in booking into the Old House again, thank you Sue and Rob for a warm welcome, clean and delightful surroundings and fantastic breakfasts!

I booked this hotel through expedia as my husband and i were to attend a reunion with some old workmates at the Bocking community centre.....we were shown our room (the oak room) which had slightly sloping floors and a couple of wonky walls...but hey ! this house is 500 years old and we immediately fell in love with it!...the bed was spotless and comfortable...we had a choice of teas coffee chocolate etc....the bathroom and shower were huge and lovely hot water and crisp white towels....we returned to the room around was lovely and quiet and we slept like logs..went down to breakfast at nine am and had a beautifully cooked full english breakfast! The owners and a young lad were very nice people and we would not hesitate staying again should we ever need to....would recommend anyone to stay there...many thanks Sue and Rob. Rita and Ken Cuss
