We booked the Christmas holidays package and spent 5 nights at hotel Kalevala. It was by far the best Christmas experience ever. We had a modern room facing towards the frozen lake with a great view. A fairytale visit to Santa's facilities, a snowshoe walk, a short reindeer sleigh ride, smoke sauna and evening sauna w/ jacuzzis were included in our package and totally worth their price. Additionally, we did a husky sleigh ride and a snowmobile ride, which were a once in a lifetime experience. Food was tasty. There is just a minor improvement suggestion: Please label the dishes in restaurant. Although everything was good, we didn't know what we were eating several times. Would we come back? Definitely, but in a different season because we don't want to spoil our memories of this great experience.

This is a very nice hotel that takes full advantage of it's lakeside location. I very much enjoyed the view of the lake from my room. Also I like that the trees were not all cut down between the lake shore and hotel, this is a more eco-friendly type of development method more builders should be mindful of. I was here with a group visiting Winter War sites for two days and every one enjoyed the food very much. There were breakfast buffet items I did not get to try because the plate was full before I got to them. Staff was very attentive and there was a rather relaxed atmosphere here, maybe because of the view of the lake from most any place in the hotel.

I booked a very last minute / 1 month away for New Years package, which was very very expensive. I Thought because it was last minute, however I spoke to some others on the package that they paid only a bit cheaper over a year in advance. The building is nice, but the rooms are really like a lodge or dorm. Very small bathroom, very small bedroom, very low quality TV, wifi barely worked in our room (we were at the end of the wing), no ammenities etc. The daily food was good some times but I feel like they tried to be super efficient just a bit too much. Meaning the same food would be on for a couple days. Bread was a bit stale after a few days.. which may just have been that it was new years and things were closed. It was a bit unorganised and people didn't really know what was going on for the first day or two, but then things started to flow. There was lots of downtime which we didn't really plan for, and given the internet was a bit poor, made it hard to watch netflix for example. It was a really unique new years eve experience and the redeeming quality was the staff, even though they seemed to a lot of different jobs, were all very pleasant and tried their best. We also met a bunch of other people who we shared some good experiences with.

Travelled as part of a group of 10 in January 2019 for 4 nights for an activity holiday. The hotel is very isolated which is nice, with all the activities nearby although the husky farm is about an hours drive by snowmobile which were both great fun. Temperatures were very cold at -23 to -28 but we were well wrapped up. Our local Finnish guide was excellent and gave us the correct equipment when necessary and made sure we were all ok. The food in the hotel was basic but very good including bear one night and plenty of fish. After the activities the hotel sauna and indoor and outdoor jacuzzis are available from 16:00 - 19:00 each day with dinner served at 19:00. There are also options to book saunas, Jacuzzis etc through reception which I did on a couple of occasions. Staff were very good and attentive. Especially the owner. I will have fond memories of this hotel and holiday and would like to go back again doing summer activities. Recommended.

Visited during summer. Amazing destination with wild nature all around. Perfect place to go hiking as the pine forests around are dry and easy to walk. Rented a rowing boat to see the lake. With a short walk, you can reach a small connected island with is all sand - beautiful beaches! Wild blueberries and lingonberries grow everywhere. Unfortunately we were there too early and they were not yet ready to be picked. Rooms would need some renovation, age shows. But luckily this is an outdoors destination.

Stayed as a group of 10 part of a organised single holidays for 4 days which was long enough the most exciting activities were included with opportunity to pay for extra other activities to fill our free time, sledges are permanently available for free with a nice safe hill for their use. Room Was very nice with all amenities one would want from a hotel room I am usually a very bad sleeper but here I slept really well. Food is very limited set menu but alternatives can be arranged if needs be I had pork offered on barbecue night as I don't like the salmon on offer. Breakfast is very basic and unadventurous but for me personally my needs were covered but you like a fry up, for breakfast not going to happen. The hotel spa offers a wide range of jacuzzis, massage treatments and saunas. If you like nightlife this is not the place to be the nearest (very small) town is a taxi ride away I didn't visit it but I believe there's not much there. The staff are all very friendly with very good English they will always go out their way to help you if they can. Highly recommend if you are after a quiet active getaway.

My Husband and I went on a new year package, the trip was a real mix! I really struggled with the food, I admit I'm fussy however there was no variety to choose from. Breakfast was the same every day, Dinner was heavily fish based! Everything was recycled, what you had for dinner one day would be served for lunch the next day! Food wastage was definitely at a minimum here! Alcohol was very expensive, a cheap bottle of red cost €40 which I could by in the U.K. for about £7-10. Our room was fairly dated in decor however it was warm and clean. Activities we done over the 6 days were good fun, I know they were tasters but maybe a little longer would have been better. Cannot fault the staff, they were all friendly and helpful. The grounds we had to explore were absolutely stunning! Overall we had a good holiday however it was very expensive for what we got for our money. I'll have fond memories of this trip but wouldn't go back there however it has opened up my mind to visiting other Scandinavian Countries.

The room reminded me of my Grandmas house, very average. The internet was very flaky (Unless you sat down at the lobby). They tried to fit it but turns out everyone was in the same boat. The food selection was very limited and very basic (gets boring after a while) (especially if you don’t like seafood). However tasted good. They also are very into conserving food, as lunch food would quite often be dinner and then tomorrow’s lunch. Service was always good and always friendly. (Which you don’t see very often) While 1 activity was included everyday, it was quite often just an hour and then you had to try and fill the rest of the day with expensive other activities that would be booked out when you went to put your name down. Probably would only recommend this to a family who were looking for a cheap get away.

A nice hotel just outside Kuhmo situated on a very attractive lake. Our pleasant room had lovely views over the water. Although breakfasts were ordinary, dinners, chosen from a short menu, were very good with a focus on local specialties. All the staff were very pleasant and helpful. Wi-fi didn't work in our room but was fine in the reception area where there is plenty of seating. There are opportunities for bear watching nearby. We stayed over the weekend and found to our surprise that both the Winter War museum near the hotel and the local Nature Centre were closed on Saturdays and Sundays so if you have a choice perhaps weekends are not the best time to be there.
