Solar Do Castelo is truly a romantic shelter in the birthplace of Lisbon - within the walls of São Jorge Castle at the top of Alfama. It is a small 18-century mansion surrounding a noble patio, built on the site of the former kitchens of the Royal Palace. Apart from the genuine antiques, most part of the furniture was specially designed for the hotel in a medieval contemporary style. In this magical place you will find welcoming rooms offering complete modern day comfort.

We wanted to stay in the heart of old Lisbon for the one night we had there, and we discovered Solar Do Castelo searching on line. It was perfect. Booking the hotel was straightforward, including requesting private transfer from airport to the hotel (which we learned would have been tricky if we had waited until arriving in Lisbon). This boutique hotel has great charm, was very clean, quiet, and very well kept. Behind the main gate that opened off a side cobblestone street - a small oasis opened up. The front desk staff were very helpful. The rooms had lots of space, and we enjoyed the complementary small flask of port with our friends. The breakfast buffet was very well prepared, with hot and cold items, fresh fruit and breads, which we enjoyed in the relaxing central courtyard while listening to the birds.

The hotel is in the heart of the old town which is very walkable, minding the cobblestone streets and many hills. Lots of local shops and restaurants within only 5-6 minutes from the hotel gates.

The hotel location is great, near the medieval castle village at the top of the hill, but we learned that only the smaller cabs can manage the narrow streets. Something to be mindful of if you are running late to get to the airport or train station (i.e., add a little more time).

Our only regret was that we had just a single night to stay and explore Lisbon before our tour moved on. Well done. We hope to be back.

This is a truly beautiful, well maintained property supplemented by an attentive and gracious staff. The common spaces are inviting and exceptionally clean. The private rooms are comfortable and well appointed with the added consideration of a complimentary decanter of port in every room. If possible, I highly recommend a room with a balcony. We were charmed by the view of the courtyard and beyond, with extra special sightings of the peacocks.

There are a couple things to consider:

1) As the hotel states, it is located in an historic neighborhood which is not open to automobile traffic. The hotel offers mutliple solutions for handling this, just ask. (It is worth saying that we managed a taxi to/from the hotel door and the airport, so don't be too dissuaded by the restriction.)

2) The area is quite heavily trafficked by tourists during the day, but relatively early in the evening it clears out completely, leaving mostly just the residents of the neighborhood. Restaurants are not particularly plentiful or open late nearby, so plan accordingly.

3) We did notice the unfailing attentiveness of the castle groundkeepers nextdoor in the mornings. (Read, noise.) If you wish to sleep in or are a light sleeper, perhaps consider ear plugs (even with the window closed).

4) While the hotel is in a beautiful part of the city with its own very special appeal, this hotel may not be ideal for anyone looking to be in the heart of activities and night life. (That is one reason we liked it!) The Castelo is undeniably worth your time, but many other sights worth seeing are further afield.

All in all, we enjoyed our experience here and will remember it fondly for a long while to come.

We stayed one evening here as a surprise for my fiancé's 30th birthday and I wish we had stayed longer! It was an absolute joy, the location was just stunning and the hotel itself is so beautifully authentic. It is directly opposite the Castelo de São Jorge which has amazing views over Lisbon and is also a stone's throw from the Miradouro de Santa Luzia and Miradouro das Portas do Sol where you can enjoy an incredible sunrise if you are an early bird like we were!

Our room was wonderful, spacious and very comfortable, and when we arrived the hotel staff brought us a bottle of champagne which was such a lovely generous gesture. The reception areas are fantastic, especially breakfast which is served until 12pm (!) and had possibly the best buffet options we've ever had, and they were so accommodating for my partner who is vegan. We stayed in November and were so fortunate with the weather and absolutely loved sitting outside in the gorgeous courtyard in the sun after breakfast with our coffees and pastéis de natas!

I really cannot recommend this beautiful hotel highly enough, the staff could not have been friendlier or more welcoming and we enjoyed every second of our stay there. We would return in a heartbeat, thank you Solar do Castelo for a such a perfect and unforgettable stay!

We chose this hotel because of its size (14 bedrooms) and tranquil setting close to the castle. Having never been to Lisbon before, our choice lived up to expectations in every sense. Our room (Rm 4) was beautifully equipped with individual style and has a spacious bathroom. Windows open out on to the Rua do Espirito Santo but they are double glazed so when they're closed you can't hear the chatter of passing tourists and local residents. But what you can hear - a lot of the time - is the sound of the numerous peacocks and peahens which congregate in the adjacent Castle grounds.

Access to the hotel can be tricky. All the roads are steep, cobbled and narrow, and busy with visitors attracted to the adjacent Castle. Licensed taxis can access the roads to the hotel, but Uber taxis have to stop at the bollards, and leave you to walk the last 150 metres!

Located in the old Alfama district of Lisbon means there are numerous places to eat nearby. We enjoyed a decent meal in the nearby Audreys Cafe and a pleasant drink at the Portas do Sol Terrace bar with its glorious views over the Bay.

There is no formal restaurant or bar iin the hotel, although they serve a very good breakfast buffet with an excellent selection of fresh cold and hot food, and there's an honesty bar for those who want a drink within the hotel. But what the hotel lacks in facilities it more than makes up for in style, character and the personal service of the staff.

We did very little homework before planning our trip to Lisbon, so we felt very lucky that we hit the jackpot on this hotel! We chose it for the very dumb reason that we saw they had peacocks roaming the area, and the peacocks did not disappoint one bit (there are a least a dozen of them roaming around). The hotel is very, very old, so it comes with some quirks. But the rooms are in excellent condition, and the staff was incredibly helpful, including arranging free rides for us to/from the airport & train station. My only warning if you're thinking to book here is that it is located near the top of the biggest hill in town, so you will either be walking or driving up & down the tiniest roads you've ever seen any time you want to go anywhere. We were fine with it, but it should be a serious consideration if you're older or have any mobility issues. Can't beat the view, though!

Much of this hotel is lovely. An oasis of calm after a busy day's sightseeing in a very hot Lisbon. It is at the top a narrow, steep, cobbled street, but full of character, stylishly decorated and very comfortable. There were nice touches like complimentary port in the bedrooms, coffee and pastries available all day and a refreshing complimentary glass of fizz in the lounge in the evening. The reception staff were helpful and friendly.

There are plenty of nice restaurants and bars nearby and it is ideally situated for much of what Lisbon has to offer. The wonderful old castle is literally around the corner (go when the doors open and you'll have it to yourself for an hour before the hoards arrive, same applies to Tram 28).

If I was being picky, I would expect the charming courtyard area to be clear of weeds. And, more importantly, and as a recent poster mentioned, I did notice that certain members of staff were excessively subservient. This outdated staff/guest relationship was unexpected and should be addressed.

Loved the location, still in awe how the driver got up those narrow streets! The staff was very friendly and helpful. The rooms are a little bit small but otherwise very nice and pretty quiet. My only suggestion would be to offer a room price that includes breakfast rather than have it a separate charge. There isn't much nearby to have breakfast at.

Dear Deborah, Thank you very much for staying with us and for sharing your opinion. We are happy to read that you appreciated our friendly staff and our magical location in the birthplace of Lisbon, at the top of Alfama, where the kitchens of the Royal Palace used to exist until the sec. XVI. Regarding breakfast, you may find both rates on the web, with breakfast included as well as room only, which was the rate booked. We look forward to welcoming you back to our beautiful city and having the opportunity to provide you with a very pleasant stay. Kindest regards, Diogo Laranjo General Manager

We had a wonderful 4 day stay at the Solar do Castelo Inn, an absolutely charming hotel in the historic Alfama are of Lisbon. We booked this hotel because of the many reviews that mentioned the positive aspect of the hotel.

I read a few negative aspects and thought I would address them here from our perspective. Hope this is helpful!

1) The hotel is up a very steep and winding hill. If you have any issues with walking up steep cobblestone paths, this is not for you. Get a bus / tram / metra pass; it will serve you well getting around Lisbon but it will be essential because the #737 bus takes you almost all the way up to the hotel, except for the last few hundred meters. Also, some have mentioned that cabs do not take you "all the way to the hotel". This was not our experience. We took several late night cabs and the drivers were happy to deliver us right to the front door.

2) We had what some have described as a "basement" room. (Room #4) It's not really in the basement as much as it is the outer wall of the hotel built into the side of the road. We found this room to be VERY quiet, cool and comfortable in the 100 degree heat. The room was very clean and spacious.

3) Peacocks squawk. That's what they do. We found it charming and they were not noisy at night.

4) It is true that there are no restaurants or bars directly near the hotel. For some this may be a negative but for us it was blissful to sit in the courtyard in the evening and enjoy the cool breeze and quiet. We did choose to breakfast at the hotel (which is fantastic) and the hotel also has complementary light snacks, fruit, coffee, etc available throughout the day. They also have a reasonably priced honor bar if you want a cocktail, or beer or wine. And while there are no restaurants directly near the hotel, there are many really incredible choices "down the hill" in Alfama.

A very quaint small hotel built adjacent to the castle walls. The staff is exceptionally accommodating, the rooms and grounds are well kept and the resident peacocks serenade you to sleep. The local area is made up of narrow streets and shops.

It is worth the effort of walking up the steep hill from downtown Lisbon to reach this gem of a hotel, situated next to the Castelo Sao Jorge.
The hotel itself is a charming boutique hotel with a spacious lounge and an equally charming courtyard.
The personnel of the hotel are courteous, attentive, helpful and competent and the service they provided during our stay at the hotel provided the perfect framework for having a wonderful out-of-season vacation in Lisbon.
We can highly recommend staying at the Solar do Castelo.

Dear Guest, Thank you for staying with us and for your kind words. We are happy to read that you enjoyed your stay with us, our friendly staff and our setting in the castle village, on the top of Alfama. Lisbon is a hilly city (like Rome it has 7 hills) but that is also one of its attractions. The best way to enjoy our city is to take a public transport to the top of the hills (there are funiculars, trams, buses, etc.) and from there easily walk down, calmly enjoying the nice details of this historic city. We hope to welcome you again soon and offer you another pleasant stay. Kindest regards, Diogo Laranjo General Manager

Hi, does your hotel allow kids? My husband and I will be traveling with 2 young children, thank you!
Lisbon, Portugal1 contribution2 helpful votes
Hello from sunny Lisbon, Solar Do Castelo is found in an historic XVIII century building within the medieval Castle village. Families with two children would need two rooms to stay at this romantic place. We usually recommend our sister property Hotel Lisboa Plaza from our Lisbon Heritage Collection, which is more suitable for families travelling with children, offering different types of family rooms. We remain at your disposal and look forward to have you with us. Warm regards ;)

Hello from sunny Lisbon! The Solar Do Castelo is located at the top of Alfama old district, in the castle village, inside the outer wall of S. Jorge Castle (the cradle of Lisbon), where traffic is restricted to residents. Some larger taxis/ubers don’t feel comfortable driving inside this small area where streets are very narrow. For your convenience we can arrange a transfer from the airport to our door. We also have a golf cart that can pick you up at the castle gate. Please contact us for more details. Warm regards :)
