This isolated old house is in a serene, beautiful setting from which you can see the famed Kylemore Abbey across the lake. Host Nora may keep to herself, but she is helpful when asked and cooks up a mighty full Irish breakfast. There are no phones or wi-fi in the rooms, but requiring that is like wanting a tablecloth when you're eating in a bowling alley. The bedroom is quite large, with great views, and now that Nora tries to limit the guests to one couple only, that pretty well guarantees a private bathroom. The religious icons in the room would not be to everyone's liking, but others might find them comforting. Nora books mostly through Airbnb now rather than the normal B&B channels. All in all, it's a very unusual and special place.
My husband and I had reservations for 1 night accommodation and upon arrival felt very uncomfortable in the house. The lady who greeted us never said hello or asked for our names, just walked us up to our room and left. The rooms had no locks and were very old with no phone service or WIFI. We felt as if we were a bother by staying there so we decided to find other accommodation for that night. The photos are misleading, and the service was greatly disappointing.
During our three weeks in Ireland we stayed at 13 BnBs. We'll rate this remote place as one of the little better accomodation than our average experience. Very kind and helpful hosts. Two nights in spacious rooms with open fire. No TV or WiFi in rooms. Bathroom is to share, breakfast okay. Yes, we would recommend a visit when being asked. Winner in "Best location"!
At Kylemore Lodge (careful, there’s also a Kylemore House B&B) you don’t see great scenery, you’re a part of it. Carol saw a photo of it in a travel magazine back in 2004 and has been hoping to stay there ever since. The setting is nothing short of amazing. It’s a simple B&B with 2 rooms on the second floor front and one in back (no view). You share a bathroom on that floor (there’s another on the first floor as back-up). The rooms are large (600 s.f.) with big windows and there’s a non-working fireplace. There are heaters, but they weren’t operating in September so it was pretty cool at night. It’s a family house on working sheep farm that’s been in Nora’s family for over 100 years. We got to watch the sheep dogs in action. Breakfast was good. Thankfully there was lots of Ireland’s amazing brown bread. We paid $75 per night.…
