I'll start with the breakfasts, which are legendary and well-documented - everything everybody says is true. They are the height of epicurean delight and you will not, I guarantee you, leave the table unsatisfied, no matter what your particular favourites are (ours was everything!). Now, that out of the way (this is by no means meant to minimize the importance of the great breakfasts but, rather to emphasize that everything at Levuka Homestay is excellent) i'll move on to the rest. Take away the owners and the breakfasts and, what do you have? You have a small, dedicated team of superb local professionals who keep the grounds/gardens and the rooms spotless. You have a location that is in the heart of Levuka. And, when I say heart, I mean it in the, I suppose, the romantic sense of the word. Stepping out of the gate and being met by two young men, strumming guitars and singing Fijian songs on their front porch. Continuing 'round the corner and stopping to watch a pick-up Rugby match played by boys of various ages. Being greeted with a smile and stopping for a chat with familiar faces - familiar because you'd met them yesterday and were now "local" (at least that's how we felt). Climbing a path to "the oval" (you'll need to ask John about this) only to find a dead-end with a house with a young boy outside who offers to take you, with great care and assistance, through the knee-high undergrowth, up the hill in his backyard to this historic space which offers amazing views of the town of Levuka and the villages surrounding it but which is, to the boy, simply where he and his friends play sport and climb trees to pick mangoes. Walking to town, down the back road past the historic school, convent, church, municipal buildings, all the while and, again, stopping, smiling, waving, chatting to the residents of this wonderful, magical place. Yes, its safe to say that Levuka (and the Homestay) holds a special place in our hearts. Okay - enough of the town and location. Moving on to John and Marilyn. They were the perfect hosts. Warm and welcoming. Inclusive, Informative. They shared their love of Levuka and the Fijian people with us and, they lived it every day. It was a joy to be around them and their team Oh, yes, sorry, the accommodation. Spotless, comfortable, everything you need to relax in your own space and nothing you didn't need. AC, small fridge, ceiling fan, spacious shower, desk, sofa, traditional louvered and shuttered windows, plus french doors leading onto the deck with seating for two. Timeless simplicity in the décor. it was cyclone season while we were there so, yes, we did spend quite a bit of time on that little deck but, what a sanctuary it was! Views to the sea through lush, colourful, varied plants that surround the property. Sitting there with the wind and rain deluge a few feet from us yet, completed protected, was the best feeling. If you've made it this far, in both this review and in your research about staying in Levuka - please, just do it. We've travelled a lot and this is, to us, a travel highlight that takes you back in time to a place that will touch your heart and stay with you long after you leave. I'm going to close with the comment I wrote in Levuka Homestay's Guest Book. It sums up our feelings - "It takes a very special host(s) to make strangers feel like friends. John, Marilyn, thank you so much for being the ultimate B&B hosts. You share the spirit of Bula in everything. The food, the rooms, the stories - all lovingly prepared and generously shared. To us, Levuka & you two ARE Fiji!"…
