I happened to visit Kommetjie on business with our eldest son Paul - our landlady (Somerset Place) suggested with try out the Lighthouse Pub & Grill. What a luck - they have specials every evening but that night it was '2 for 1' drinks & because Somerset Place is 50 meters away, we did not have to drive! The ambience & food was tops & I'm heading straight back there on my next visit to Kommetjie! By the way they have different & super value for money specials every night! Louis-THE-lawyer
We stayed at 39 Lighthouse Road for a week in Jan/Feb 2011. As there were only two of us we negotiated a special rate. Ask. The place is a spacious family house that takes up almost all of the stand/plot and will accommodate 6 people very comfortably. The house design is quirky and interesting (outside spiral stairs to the balcony, mind your head if you are tall) and has a beach house feel about it. There is an attached flat where the owners live, (Simon and Taryn, a quiet young couple). We used the master bedroom which is absolutely enormous, as are the walk in wardrobe and the en suite bathroom. The other two bedrooms are regular sized rather than huge. The upstairs (queen) bedroom and shower room (off the TV room) have recently been refurbished and are very smart. The downstairs (twin) bedroom has been redecorated but the bathroom is dated. If the whole house was occupied this would probably be the quietest bedroom. The kitchen is very good. The living room (open plan dining room/downstairs lounge) is extremely spacious. The TV lounge (upstairs) is also large. Wifi is available although this is not mentioned on the website. Just ask Simon. The main pros: This is the best value for money self catering that we found in the area, the place is huge for six and palatial for two, there is more than enough to do on the peninsular/Cape Town (45 minutes by car to the Waterfront) to keep you busy for two weeks, the location is good, especially for surfers (4 minutes walk to the famed Kommetjie big wave beach), day to day shopping is a 10 minute drive to the mall or 4 minute walk to the village shops/restaurants, it’s a good area from the security point of view, great balcony for views and braii. The main cons: Self transport is a must, there’s no secure parking (albeit that security seems not to be a problem, the owners park on the road), no swimming pool, baboons visit the neighbourhood so need to be aware not to leave doors/windows open when they are about (actually this is also a plus as we enjoyed watching the baboon antics). Of the six self catering places we have stayed at in SA, this is easily the best. We thoroughly enjoyed staying here, recommend it and will be going back.…
Four of us stayed at the guesthouse at 39 Lighthouse Road in Kommetjie, Cape Town, for a week over New Year 2010-2011. I can highly recommend it. The guesthouse is very spacious, beautifully equipped and furnished, it has a huge kitchen and living area, wonderful views, a fantastic wooden deck area upstairs (we spent most of our evenings up there sipping sundowners around the "braai" as we watched the sun set over the ocean). The house is a perfect getaway, on a quiet road but only a few minutes walk to the beach, a few minutes walk to mountain hikes and Kommetjie lighthouse, and 5 minutes walk into the heart of the lovely village of Kommetjie where there is a general dealer, a couple of restaurants, pub, coffee shops, bookshop and a surf shop. Kommetjie beach has a winding wooden pathway which is great for walks, and besides that route you can walk all along the coast to Long Beach and Noordhoek beach. Kommetjie itself is about 20 mins drive to Hout Bay over the scenic Chapmans Peak Drive, about 20 minutes drive to the warm waters of Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay and Muizenberg, and perhaps 30 minutes drive to the centre of Cape Town. The weather was lovely and sunny when we were there but I can imagine this guesthouse would be very cosy in the winter months too, it has a large modern fireplace downstairs which would heat the house beautifully. ...Lots of space, lots of light, comfortable, uncluttered and beautifully equipped with two lounges, one upstairs and one downstairs, a dining room, internet access, channel TV, a private garden, large bedrooms, washing machine, dishwasher, the main ensuite has the most stunning bath & shower, there's a second ensuite bedroom upstairs with shower & loo and a third ensuite bedroom downstairs with bath and loo. Very highly recommended, we can't wait to go back! ..to the big blue house at 39 Lighthouse Road in Kommetjie, Cape Town.…
