A very successful holiday, the hotel staff was very nice and helpful, we especially wanted to thank the lady (blonde) from the reception who helped me carry my suitcase to the room. A big thank you to the bartenders - Vasilis, Manilis, Christos and Pavlos.... thank you !!!

Nice hotel to stay. Staff very friendly and speak English, some of them speak Russian. Not very close to the beach, but for that price this is acceptable. Tasty breakfast which you can choose what to order starting 8 am till 11 am. There is a swimming pool which is closing at 7 pm.

The apartments are run by friendly, welcoming and very helpful staff. The facilities are good and breakfast excellent quality and value. We ate breakfast here every day before heading out. Perfect if you want to get out and about plenty.

Many guests did spend the days by the pool but that was not for us. Heading down to the beach and pool bar/restaurants just a short walk away (approx 10 mins) and also all of the shops in the resort Platanias.

We were very well looked after. Apartment was very spacious and clean.

Classic Greek apartments which are a little on the basic side but ideal.

Will definitely go back!

Dear Guest, We thank you for your kind review and are glad you enjoyed your stay. For 2018 we are preparing an even better service and food. Our breakfast will be enriched with a lot of new products on the buffet and new dishes out of the kitchen. We have also replaced all the plants inside the hotel with around 300 new rose trees of diverse colours and scents and we are preparing more changes. They might not all be spectacular but they will certainly be the kind of little details and attentions that we hope will make your experience at Castello Bianco even better. Again, thank you for taking time to write this review and for your kind support which is so important to us. Yannis

We got a spacious appartment at the back of the hotel, quiet enough and sun in the morning on the balcony. We slept well on the beds in the bedroom as well as the ones in the main room which doubled as sofas. Good matrasses. The airco worked well, the bathroom and kitchen were of a reasonable standard, nothing fancy, but fine for the 5 days we were there. A welcoming drink and helpful staff. Breakfast must be their main selling point, can’t be faulted and jolly service. The pool worked well and was beautiful. I would not have liked to be at the front of the hotel, far too noisy with the main road. Supermarkets and a fantastic choice of restaurants, bars and shops in the lively village just a few hundred meters away. It’s touristy in a generous Greek way, open and laid back. Buses opposite Pavlakis supermarket to Rethymnon every 30 minutes, taking you to the main square there in 20 minutes. The beach near the hotel was gorgeous, lots of different pebbles, and sand, quite big waves, we had fun. All in all a perfect and easy place for a relaxing, varied and interesting holiday to Crete.

Dear Guest, We thank you for taking the time to write a review. As you correctly mentioned, Castello Bianco is about friendliness, relaxation and good food. We are not a super 5* hotel but we do our best in order to keep everyone (or almost) satisfied. The infrastructure is what it is, we upgrade the hotel every year, but it takes time. So what we can do is a better service, better food and a nice friendly and relaxing atmosphere. I think that when you run a hotel, you have always to think: "what can I do better?" Some things do not depend on me but I can guarantee that I always try (and all the staff with me) to do the best of what is possible. We really put a lot of energy in making your holidays the best possible and we are really happy when we succeed. Thank you for your kind words and all the best from all of us. Warm regards Yannis

We stayed here on our way from Heraklion to Chania, as we had arrived late by ferry. It wasn't bad for a quick sleep and breakfast, but not a place I would want to stay much longer than that.

The Good
- The room appeared fairly clean.
- The breakfast was quite good. One of the few places we stayed at in Greece that provided large custom omelettes.

The Bad
- This hotel looks like it hasn't been updated since the 1970's (the 14" tube TV was a nice antique to have in the room)
- We paid for a sea view room. While it is true that you can see the sea from the room, the hotel is quite a way from the sea, so there was little point in paying extra for the sea view.
- There isn't much around the hotel, so you will need a vehicle.

Dear guest, We thank you for taking time to write a review. You stated that you arrived late in the evening and left the next morning, maybe the time you were at the hotel was not enough in order to assess all the sides of the hotel. Please note that as everyone who did stay here for more than a "quick sleep" knows, there are plenty of shops, restaurants, coffee shops, Supermarkets etc. etc within 3-4 minutes walk and a car is not needed in any way in the sense you mention it. Should you have read other comments, you would have known that the hotel is going under heavy renovation work since last year and for the next 2-3 years. Maybe you did not have time to notice our state of the art new glass pool, our brand new bar, our brand new kitchen. As it is mentioned on our website and on all websites that sell the hotel, the hotel is located 400 meters from the sea, something you should have noticed when reserving your stay. Our one-bedroom apartments all have a new flat screen TV and those of the studios will be changed this winter, even though our guests are here to enjoy the Cretan summer and even though we do have a satellite dish with around 30 channels. Let alone that for a hotel remaining in the 70's (it was actually built beginning of the 90's) it must be very advanced with it's Wi-Fi in all the hotel including in the rooms. I am not saying in any way that this hotel is perfect (reason for which the hotel is going under renovation for another 2-3 years) but I think it is important as consumers to take the time to assess correctly anything we emit an opinion on. Furthermore a hotel is not only walls and rooms and equipment, it is also its people, all those who make a very big effort in order to make your holidays a memorable time, those who will help you if you need something. Those who will make your food, your room and many others that will work hard every single day in order to make things happen. Again, I think that a "quick sleep" is not enough in order to emit an opinion on them. Again, we thank you taking the time to write a review. Kind regards Yannis

Beautiful Hotel, lovely and clean. Ate there twice, food was very good. Helpful, friendly staff. Very chilled atmosphere. Quiet location, main road outside no problem. Excellent quality free Wifi, Air Con and Safe. 2 min walk from main drag with plenty of supermarkets, cheap and quality tat shops and Taverners a plenty. Rethymno 15 min bus ride away, easy to find bus stop and tickets. Beach a further 2 mins down from the main drag. Aldi 5 min walk. Lots of different nationalities stay at this hotel.

Dear Claire, Thank you so much for your kind comment. As you know, we make a big effort in our kitchen. I have made the menu myself and I personally supervise cooking in the evening. Having been brought up in northern Europe and having done my hostelry school in Lausanne - Switzerland, when I came to Greece a few years ago I thought it would be interesting to prepare a fusion cuisine that mixes the fresh and tasty local products with a touch of French "savoir faire". I try to produce tastes that combine the aromas and the health benefits of the Mediterranean cuisine with the lightness of food we are used to in northern and central Europe. I think there is still a lot to be done in this field and I am really glad that our guests enjoy what we try to do. Again thank you very much for your kind words. Warm regards from Crete Yannis

This is a very hard review to write, because we really tried to make it work, and the amount of dissapointments was bigger than the things that actually worked. It took us a long time to decide on this hotel, and most of the good reviews we read here and on booking gave us a good feeling that we chose what we wanted of a holiday accomodation to be. Well, not everything really added up, unfortunately.
I will try to start with the good things, just to point out there were things that did perform as they should in a holiday appartment accomodation.

Pros:
- The appartments we got were on the second level with a view to the pool and an ok view of the sea.
- The appartment was quite big, suited for a family of 4, but we were just 2 for the whole stay
- AC present, and it worked fine
- Rooms were cleaned on a daily basis and towels changed often
- You get beach towels from the hotel as well, so you don´t need to carry your own
- The staff is really friendly and always trying to help, we received a very nice welcome, considering we had a very late flight and checked in at around 2 a.m.
- Nice pool area, we could see the manager was checking the water purity daily, and the water was clean indeed.
- Close to Platanes city center, 5 min walk, but quiet still, because it is not in the actual city of Platanes, but a bit aside

Cons:
- We specifically mentioned wanting a double bed, as we were 2 married couples travelling together, and if possible to be close-by. We were close by, but there were 2 single beds in the bedroom. Considering that was our first holiday together with my husband, not being able to share a bed, was a really big minus on our first holiday together. We adressed the issue to the reception, were said the manager was not there, that they will try to fix the issue, oh not today maybe tomorrow.....anyway, excuses, until we just gave up and accepted nothing will change. I noticed during our stay, that other rooms had the upgraded new beds, with thicker matresses and newer beds as presented on the pictures on booking, but it seemed like the appartments we got had the oldest beds and furniture, so the least upgraded. Needless to say the mattress was very uncomfortable and awfull to sleep on.
- Again, very deceiving pictures, the appartments did not have a big bathroom with a bathtub as promoted, but a very tight small shower, with a curtain that hang way to high, hence water everywhere, everytime you took a shower.
- The place, although super clean and obviously freshly painted, still smelled old, especially the kitchen cupboards. Our furniture was pretty old as well, i.e. mattress, tables, cupboards. No pretty lamps, as the staged pictures advertised to us, etc.
- The freezer door was broken, and it seemed they tried to (badly) fix it, but it stayed always opened, and ice always formed there, making it hard to use. We used our friend´s freezer instead, but it was unpleasant to have a defective appliance.
- The breakfast was ok, but not "amazing" as many people said. You had eggs of choice, some fruits and yoghurt, and cheese and cold meats only when you order your eggs, not on display buffet style. Being a group of 4, we always got one plate of cold meats of cheese and had to constantly try to order some more, because they always brought like 2-3 slices of each. It was funny, and kinda tiring, having to do that everyday for 10 days. The cooks seemed nice and am sure tried their best, but often times we would get a burned omelette, or over salted, impossible to eat eggs. Waiters always seemed very confussed. We had to repeat our order several times. They were very nice, and all that, but breakfast time was just so tiring because of these issues.
- Overall the hotel was okay, but not great. We didn´t stay there very much, as we had a rental car and travelled around to other beaches, which I recommend you do, if you are a couple. Maybe this place would be more suitable for families, but the renovation leaves a lot to be desired. If they would replace the furniture in the rooms, then the hotel would looks at least 5 times better.

Though the price was ok for the accomodation we got, I don´t think I would come back to this hotel again, and won´t be recommending this to anyone.

Dear Guest, We thank you for your comment which is important to us. We mostly value critics and always investigate them thoroughly. Therefore after looking into the matter, please note the following: Concerning the rooms, your reservation NEVER mentioned that you wanted a double bed, you only mentioned in your e-mail dated 08/06/2017: "I would like to also add, if possible to have the appartments close to one another, would be nice :)". I also mention here that your rooms were not only close by as mentioned but next to each other. Concerning your request for changing room, our reception informed you that we will check if we could change you room on the first day and next day specifically informed you that due to the fact that the hotel was full, it would not be possible. Nothing was left vague. Looking into your reservation, I also noticed that in your original booking you had made a mistake and were about to pay around 600 Euros more than the correct price. We informed you of this mistake and made you pay around 600 Euros less than what you planned. Unfortunately you totally forgot to mention that. Concerning bathrooms, we have some bathrooms with shower and some with bathtub, nevertheless in our description we only mention shower. As I already said before to other guests in my replies, bathrooms need to be restored and they are programmed for winter 2018-2019. Not only will they be restored but also made bigger. But for now they are clean and descent we think. Concerning breakfast, we chose not to use a buffet for everything as it would limit the choice. We offer, 5 types of cheeses, 5 types of delicatessen and more than 40 choices of omelets, scrambles, boiled, cloud eggs etc. etc.!!! This is on top of the small buffet we already have. All those cannot go on a buffet as you would need it to be around 50 meters long and most of all nothing would remain fresh. Just imagine 40-50 types of eggs after2 hours. We produce around 7'000 omelets and different types of eggs in a season and yes, one can come out wrong, it must have happened at some point. The only thing you have to do is just return it and ask for a new one. Please understand that we want our customers happy, but for that, we need your help. If you see something wrong, mention it and we will try our best to fix it whenever it is in our hands. You wanted more cheese and delicatessen, just ask for it and we would have gladly brought it to you. Most of our guests do not like waists, they think that buffets produce a lot of waist in a world were some people do not have enough to feed themselves. Therefore, the system we have implemented according to their wishes offers a bigger variety than a buffet and limits waits to the minimum possible. We are very proud of our way as it offers a much wider choice of food and at the same time is very ecological and Zero waist minded (in order to protect our environment). Concerning renovation, again as I mentioned before to other comments it is an ongoing process. We have partly renovated the hotel and we continue every winter. All guests that take time to read my replies are aware of that. The hotel will be completely renovated for summer 2020 (unless of course someone is ready to give us around 1 million Euros needed to finish immediately!!!). Lastly I will again mention that we are far from perfect and we know it, but we are all trying our best, with the help and support of our guests to make everyone happy (which is not always possible). We can do a lot if we are aware of a problem (like breakfast) but not everything (like the double bed in your case), but at least we can try if you let us know. We all wish you a very good continuation. Kind regards Yannis

Sorry, I had not noticed your question until now. There are plenty of agencies for days trips in the area (10 minutes walk from here), and they have a vast choice of offers to choose from according to your preferences. Also, we work with Thomas Cook and TUI which do have reps coming at the hotel. So if you do not wish to go around the travel agencies of the region, you can also book with them. Our reception will give you all the needed information. Kind regards Yannis

There are two restaurants within a block, both very reasonable. A bit further up on the main street are many more. Given our short stay and the long day we put in by hiking the Samaria Gorge we didn't get a chance to get out to any bars or pubs. Generally, we found food and drink to be relatively inexpensive on Crete
