We saw this lovely city on our conducted tour around the Golden Ring, and we were here for one night and half a day. In my opinion, the BEST thing, by far, in Yaroslavl was the riverside walk along the Volga River. One of the best riverbank walks I have experienced, anywhere in the world. The river looks great, and there are some very interesting churches on the walk, apart from some other beautiful buildings. Very very photogenic. Even in bad weather! If it is a nice sunny day, you could not ask for more! Remember, this city is over a thousand years old, our guide regaled us with plenty of stories of the past. It is the biggest city between Moscow and the Arctic.

We took the boat from the embankment (There is a water-taxi style boat that is extremely cheap to take the ride out to Tolga) and it was a nice cruise, followed by an absolutely beautiful church grounds.
Keep in mind, this is an active religious site, so proper attire is required. Men should wear pants (not shorts) and women should have a headscarf over their hair and have on a modest skirt/dress (they do have wraps available for free at the entrance)
The grounds are absolutely beautiful, and there are services to attend if you arrive early enough in the day (I believe they close around 5 or 6) There is also a little shop where you can get church make priyanik and a birch-juice drink that are unique and quite good.
If religious history is your thing, you simply must go here.

But this forever young beauty is as charming as before.
I visited it in September, on a bright golden autumn weekday. The church was open since it was rather warm. I stepped inside. Practically no-one around. Spell-binding old frescoes, icons, a magnificent iconostasis, fragrance of frankincence, soft crackling of burning candles. And silence. Enveloping silence.
    I love you, Ilya.
It's somewhat puzzling, however, that one has to pay an entrance fee to see that splendor. They say it's a museum. Okay, it is. But first of all, it's a place of worship, a place to pray. For dough?
Still, strongly recommended! A unique drawcard any city on earth would be proud of.
(Parking nearby is a challenge - too many official institutions around. Try smaller streets a bit further.)

I was there in October. Alone.
Well worth seeing! Two previous reviews give a fair picture of what it is like. I'd only add that the place is a tad small for such extensive an exhibit so do check if it is crowdy inside. If it is, then just go later - no worries!
Parking may be a problem there in high season but still in Yaroslavl' it's mostly free of charge (on allocated places, otherwise beware of tow-aways).
Ticket price is fair but please mind that international credit cards do not work in Russia these times, so take some Rouble cash with you.
    Recommended.
("Show-Maket Golden Ring" in this case means "the Golden Ring in miniature" in Russian, by the way.)

It is worth taking public transport or a shared taxi to visit this place but I don't recommend paying to see the interior, unless you want to skip other entrances of old churches in Russia!

If you are fond of Russian exotic, that's the right place. Kitschy a bit, but as Russian as it can be. Very centrally located, right by the walls of Yaroslavl kremlin, and has all facilities and amenities you expect from solid three star hotel. Keycards, good wireless access around all premises, traditional and Western food on the menu (prices are reasonable). Staff is very good and affable, cleaniness and service level of chain hotel (which it isn't, though it belongs to the circle of themed establishments under one owner) here are combined with distinct own style.

This zoo was fascinating to me, it has a mix of older style animal enclosures, but also seems to be getting updated and has a few new attractions as well. While I was not impressed with the older style cages, they did appear to have quite a few healthy species on display, and some of the animals seemed to have very nice enclosures with plenty of room and enrichment. I hope they continue to update some of their older exhibits in this way.
If you enjoy zoos, and especially aquariums, I would recommend spending some time here.

Beautiful scenery of this Strelka Park due to this typical temperate continental climate-
More snowy colder but dry winters, and warmer summers. The flowers and landscaping

I was in Yaroslavl' dozens of times but this first visit to its Art museum was a pleasant surprise. Nestling on the Volga river embankment among old lime trees this small XIX century mansion boasts excellent collection of Russian artists of the time. Ivan Aivazovsky, Vladimir Makovsky, Karl Bryullov, Ilya Repin, Viktor Vasnetsov, Vasily Perov, Arkhip Kuindzhi - these names may not say much to a foreigner but every Russian knows them. Anyhow, in case you're not that fond of the stuff take a look at icons collection. All in all, every visitor will find something to admire in this cozy and perfectly maintained building.
There's also a charming garden behind where you may stroll for an additional fee.
    Very nice. Recommended.

If you are a fan of old Russian movies, or simply watched the old Soviet film "Afonya", then this small monument might be of interest to you. Located in the alleys behind the Alyosha Popovich Dvor hotel (near the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery) right by the Afonya cafe, it's a dedication to the two beloved characters from the Russian film with the same name. As the story has it – the film tells us about plumber Afanasiy Boschyov, and even though it's never stated in the movie, it is known, that many places in Yaroslavl were filmed for "Afonya" in 1974.
