Very nice museum free of charge at an unusual place. If you are heading for the top of Marmolada don't miss this museum on the way up. It's absolutely worth the stop.

A passage through history of glasses development, archaic articles, and fashion. Although the show is small you can get by with 1 hour visit but it is worth the time spent. Besides the location is great.

The museum is interactive and uses many media to explain the history of Bellunese Emigration from the mid-1800s to 1960s.

We spent the weekend in Belluno, and spent Sunday wandering around the old Centro. The 'new museum of Belluno', located in the wonderfully refurbished Palazzo Fulcis, was an absolute knock-out. The building itself is amazing, with some wonderful floors (both tiled, and wooden) and ceilings. The collection is brilliant, ranging from stone fragments from local ancient buildings, through an incredible collection of paintings, to porcelains and household objects. Such a collection in such a building, for a relatively small city, was a total surprise. They are set up ready for educational activities, which I'm sure the local schools will really be able to use. The panels of text explaining the history and significance of the various pieces, in both Italian and English, were very well done.

More than 14,000 people lost their lives on Monte Piana/Piano during WW1. This is an open-air museum which shows some of the sites of this sad part of Italian history.
We took the shuttle service up which was well worth the 12 euro return fare since the walking path up the mountain uses the same road as the shuttle. The views along the path are not exceptional and the driver told us the average walk time is 2.5 hours.
We arrived at the top fresh and ready to explore. Monte Piana is a plateau and trails are classed for tourist walking (easy). There is the option to take a ferrata path, but that is an alternate route and not part of the museum. There are various stations along the way which point out significant events from the war. Some of the trenches are open and can be explored. There are also a few caves open (bring a flashlight and be familiar with using ropes to get down).
The mountain was a prominent battle site because it offers 360 views of the entire area. The scenery is breathtaking, but the monument itself is heartbreaking.

The MMM is located near the summit of Mt. Rite, best access is from Forcella Cibiana: 1) hiking up the gravel road, 2) follow a small marked path which cuts down the distance to cover considerably, 3) take one of the small shuttle busses which operate at a 30 min. schedule between 9 am and 6 pm (summer 2016). The best thing to do is to hike up the small path through the mountain forest with scenic views to the south. The difference in altitude to be covered is 630 m, the distance is approx. 6 km. A small mountain inn is located near the museum.

The museum is located in an ancient military fort from the Great War. The glas domes on the roof are the distinctive architectural feature of the museum. Tickets are cheap at 6 Euro for adults. The museum leads from the early days of mountaineering in the Dolomites (18th Century, Theodore de Sassure) to modern times (Walter Bonatti, died 2011). The beautiful exhibits (paintings, sketches, pieces of equipment, photographs) illustrate each period.

The only and biggest shortcoming of the museum are its didactics. Very little information is provided on key mountaineers (e.g. Dibona, Preuss, Grohmann). What was special and new about their achievements ? While locations are indicted for all large-scale photographs and most sketches, visitors who are not intimately familiar with the geography of the Dolomites must feel lost. As somebody who has visited and read about the Dolomites and the history of mountaineering for 30 years you can put the sparse pieces of information together. Anybody else must miss most of the value the museum has to offer.

In summary, the MMM is definitely worth a visit. The panoramic view from the top of Mt. Rite is truly impressive. However, the didactic setup of the museum does need an in-depth relaunch guided by a professional historian or a specialist in exhibitions.

This museum is worth checking out if only because of the significance of the man who lived there as a child. Tiziano was nothing short of an artistic genius and Pieve di Cadore is rightly proud that he is from there.

Highly recommended for all who already know and love Papa Luciani, and for those wanting to learn about this great spiritual leader, run by most helpful and knowledgeable staff. A most rewarding experience!
