Our tour stopped at the Moulay Ali Cherif Mausoleum. This is the final resting place of the founder of the (current) Moroccan Alawite dynasty and several of his sons. While the elaborate gate and court yard is open to all, the mausoleum itself and the attached mosque are off limits to non-Muslims. It is possible to look into the mosque through its doors.

The building is actually a relatively recent construct. The original was heavily damaged by flooding and restored / rebuilt in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

While we were there one of the local individuals demonstrated how a Tuareg Berber headdress is wound around the head.

On our walking tour of Rissani we walked around the ruins of the old Berber city of Sijilmassa. There is not much left of the buildings of this once great city, other than one walled area.
The site is recognized by Morocco’s Ministry of Culture, but there is no protection and you can wander wherever you wish. As you walk through the site you discover broken pottery, which litters the ground and can just be picked up and carried away. Sad that the Ministry does not protect the site better.

As part of our walking tour of Rissani we were taken to this building. There is lots of restoration work going on at the moment as the buildings are in a very poor state. There was an elderly lady who appeared to live on the site, but our guide was allowed to show us around the many rooms and the courtyard. Sad to see what was originally a very grand building in such a poor state.

This ksar is relatively close to Rissani. Not very easy to get to. Route N13 is your best bet. It seems to be more off the beaten track. Its beautiful ornate gate in defensive walls make the effort of finding the place worthwhile. Not easy to visit inside. You may need to talk to the locals.
