This is a memorial & cemetery to the dead from the Siege of Leningrad(St Petersburg)
from 1941 - 1944.
I found it to be a very moving & upsetting place that commemorates the soldiers & civilians who perished in the 900 Day siege of the city.
There is a small information office at the entry that shows photos & small display cabinets with relics & artefacts from the siege. In one cabinet it shows a daily ration of bread that was made using wood glue, it was a reminder of the desperation that the people endured everyday.
The cemetery has rows & rows of mass graves approx. 25,000 in each that are marked by each year of the siege, no names are marked on the graves.
There is also a commemorative statue to Mother Russia on a raised platform at the end of the cemetery where they hold their memorial services.
The whole place is beautifully maintained & respected.
I recommend visiting this place if in St.Petersburg & interested in its WW2 history. A sad reminder of the nearly 1million who perished in the 900 day siege.
