I can't imagine a more reverential monument to a nation's founders, memory, honor, and pride. Dignified and fascinating.

I was reluctant to visit the circus as I imagined they would use animals in the show. After checking with the guides, they confirmed that although there are sometimes animals, there would be none that day.

The acrobats were really impressive! World class acts and some really funny ones too. Half of our tour opted out of this - I’m glad I changed my mind last-minute!

No photos once the show starts. Was sad to see so many tourists ignoring this one polite request from staff. Sometimes over and over, after being asked politely to put their camera away. Just take a photo at the start and just enjoy the show.

A good example of the current art work being produced and you also get to see a few artists at work who are clearly highly regarded and well looked after. The sterile environment in their studios seems a bit stifling to the creative spirit though.

It was an authentic experience to ride the Metro, & my favourite in Pyongyang. I absolutely love the stations and platforms which are old but are orderly & clean. The Pyongyang Metro has a unique character that you can’t find It anywhere else. The murals on the walls are beautiful, that is, if you love North Korean propaganda art. The cars can be crowded during rush hour just like in any city. But your guide will take good care of you. The locals are shy in front of foreigners but they are nice to have offered seats to us. The platforms are great places for people photography as well.

As others have said, it is the only place you can exchange for local North Korean won. But hide it in your luggage; don't leave it in your wallet of purse as the customs agents at the airport or border will find it and confiscate it.

As for the store, during our visit it was -6 degrees outside and about the same inside. Plus, they were doing all this construction on the second floor so the air was suspect. For sure, lots of fine dust and particles floating around. But the shopping is cheap. Rather than pay for cleaning my clothes, I just bought new socks and underwear at 50 cents a pair. Also, the common rice wine (soju) was prevalent with many brands and cheap. Unfortunately, the North Korean glass the wine is bottled in is also cheap and may not survive the flight home so pack well and dry. Pharmaceuticals are a little spare and there are no translators; it was impossible to let the staff know I was looking for lip balm. They were more than a little perturbed thinking a grown man was wanting to by lipstick for himself.

Probably the best part of the experience, though, would be the ability to meet and interact with the locals for over an hour without the North Korean minders watching over our shoulders all the time. Many were indifferent but I found the kids and teens were most receptive. Also, I believe this store is only for the party elite and other favored people. Not all Koreans can shop here.

Lastly, the food court on the top floor was really cool. Lots of choices and again, really cheap.

I signed up for the 2023 Koryo tour along the DMZ between North and South Korea. With no tourists allowed into North Korea this was as close as we were going to get to the country.

A very good tour - well managed, excellent experts accompanying us (academics, former military chaps and others) who knew their stuff. A lot of the group had been to North Korea before so their observations were as valuable as the formal discussions with the experts meaning it was quite an immersive tour. Beware that one night you might end up sleeping on a mat under a blanket (inside a guest house) so be prepared for a slightly uncomfortable night...at the time, afterwards I was glad we managed it!).

The downside? There's a lot of driving because we got to see a lot of observatories, monuments, beaches, fortifications, museums etc - no question that we weren't sitting around waiting for things to happen but we were out on the road to go and see them. The traffic near Seoul can be quite bad and that can make journeys longer than expected - but the experts kept us well-informed as we travelled and our coach had plenty of room.

Would I recommend it? Certainly if North Korea remains closed. Once it opens up my guess is that most people will prefer to go into the country rather than along the edge of it. Koryo have been doing these in-country tours for a long time and are quite experienced at them so when they start the tours up again I'd be happy to join one of their tours going into North Korea.

Many in our group enjoyed a game of bowling. Important to find a ball the fits your grip and you can lift! Our pin setter malfunctioned a few times during our game which delayed our completion. Bowling shoes are provided. Automatic scoring was welcome. We sent to the centre on a public holiday so it was very busy. Good to see locals out enjoying themselves.
