My week in Acapulco has been wonderful. Traveling with my elderly parents comes with challenges. Upon our arrival, we asked our hotel staff about tours, and we were put in touch with David from Pacific Tours, who dashed over from a neighboring hotel to greet us and offer suggestions for tours. We booked a total of four tours during the week, and David selected options that seemed custom- made for my parents and me. On my own, I did one afternoon tour that included a few stops at markets so I could shop and look at local wares, in addition to a stop at Fort San Diego, a visit to a beautiful church, and a scenic ride through the city. Fernando was my guide, and any traveler would be lucky to spend the afternoon in his company. He even stopped to buy me a bottle of water. Our guide for the other three tours we booked was Rogelio (“Roger Dodger”). After the first day with him, we asked for him again. Roger took us to see the important sites around Acapulco, and he shared with us an interesting mix of humor, history, geography, language, art, and culture related to the area. One tour included the cliff divers’ evening show, followed by a leisurely dinner under the stars at Las Brisas Hotel with an incredible view of Acapulco. Roger made the whole experience extra special. I especially appreciate how much care he took to assure that my parents didn’t have to worry about too many stairs or steps. Today he took us to some more markets where local people shop, he had us eating the sweetest, juiciest fruit we’ve ever tasted, and later he took us to a little place for lunch that we would never have found on our own and will not soon forget. I was kind of sad saying goodbye to Roger at the end, because the whole experience was more like being shown the sites by a friend who treated my parents like he would treat his own parents. My memories of my week in Acapulco will always include Roger.
