Beautifully wild and isolated spot
kwi 2021
Access to the reservoir is down a narrow county lane from Lofthouse village.
This is a circular walk of just under 4½ miles starting at the car park entrance (free). It can be extended to 7 miles by continuing around the adjacent Angram dam. As it was quite late in the day we concentrated on the shorter of the two walks which takes around 1½ hours. The route is quite easy to follow and is well signposted although you can download a map and useful information leaflet from the Nidderdale AONB website.
At the time of our visit it was very quiet and we almost had the place to ourselves other than sheep and wildlife. There are useful information boards explaining the history of the dam construction near the car park and it truly is a magnificent feat of engineering for the early 20th century. At the far end of the walk, there are the remnants of an abandoned village.
It is generally easy walking with few steep gradients. Its main attraction is its sheer isolation with terrific views around the reservoir. We saw several few lapwings with spectacular aerial displays.

Beautiful place to visit with great views!

This place is stunning! The footpaths are well marked and the car parking was well set out.
We had a beautiful walk around the reservoir with plenty of benches to take a wee break.
I imagine that it could be bleak when the weather comes in though!

Stunning

My first visit to the area. I was really impressed with the scenery and surroundings, it was beautiful. The Reservoir was easily accessible by car and we parked in the nearby car park which was free. The information boards about the history and construction of the Reservoir were interesting and the remains of the buildings could be seen as well as a restored building from the time the Reservoir was built. It is an impressive structure with superb views. Extremely tranquil and a great place to visit. We crossed the Reservoir and enjoyed the views on both sides. The water was so calm. It is somewhere I would like to visit again. A walk around the Reservoir is a must when in the area. I took my dog who really enjoyed it also. Strongly recommended.

We have been to Scar on many occasions and love it every time... today it was raining, and of course Covid restrictions in place, so no toilet facilities are available at the moment, but do you know what, we still enjoyed our walk rain or not 😂

Wild and windy walking - but beautiful.
sty 2020
Walking with a small group, we followed the footpath across the dam and left to circumnavigate Scar House Reservoir. Muddy and slippery at times, so it needs good boots together with wind and waterproof clothing. It's high up so usually windy and the weather can change quickly. It's around 4 miles, with the last mile or so on a firm track. There's a good car park, toilets and (summer only) a small cafe. Worth the journey and walk for the lovely views and fresh air.

Lovely walk round. Chilly but pretty! Only part of the path is tarmac so could be a shorter walk for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

We only spotted sheep!
lip 2019 • Pary
It was late afternoon when we got there and there was only one car but we didn't see anybody...only sheep.

The sun was not high in the horizon and we could see all the reservoir in its splendour
