Stroll across the walls.

We walked into the Medieval quarterly Saint Valery sur Somme past the church and across the walls down on to the harbour side. Some steep cobbled slopes but manageable with care.

this is on eye opener on the history of the region , the change in the area is so well captured in the paintings inside

The town and area is so rich in history , you can spend a full day here. There are wonderful shops and restaurants to do people viewing. Parking is a problem , make sure you pay upfront enough not to get a parking fine.

Wonderful place to relax ...
maj 2019 • Dla rodziny
The countryside surrounding this coastal town is beautiful, flat salt marshes with assorted grazing animals. Lovely cycle tracks along riverside bye-ways. We parked in an expensive municipal car park along the promenade...try to park at one of the edge of town car parks as they are free. The walk along the port quay is pretty as is the old steam train, which carries passengers along that stretch.

The one narrow high street has the usual assortment of local shops or there’s a wide path along the promenade if you prefer, as you head towards the old medieval town up on the hill. There are fabulous views out to the bay and out to sea. Looks like you can walk for miles sea-ward. There’s a wide sandy beach on which to play on and a cafe for refreshments.

A charming place to visit, even though it’s a bit out of the way and the main road in from the north was closed when we went, necessitating a picturesque detour.

A lovely fishing town with old ramparts and Artisan shops
paź 2018 • Dla rodziny
Saint Valery sur Somme is a hidden gem. Popular with French and Belgian tourists but yet to be influenced by the English cross-channel day tripper.Which is a shame! This place is gorgeous, small lanes of pretty colourful fishermen's homes and cobbled streets, fantastic seafood restaurants, amazing views of the Bay of Somme and a Medieval fortified quarter. The ramparts are high above the town with great views of the town and bay. An ideal day trip - 80 minutes from Calais. Boat trips into the bay in Summer and a steam railway make this the ideal family destination.

Lovely scenic town with views across the Estuary

This is one of our very favourite places and we always like to visit when in the area. We like to stay at the Guillaume but this time could not book when we wanted so stayed elsewhere but we did make our regular visit. We parked in the large free car park at the top of the hill and walked down. We were showing the place to out niece so walked round the town including the old parts. We had hoped to visit the museum of Picardy but although we arrived within the stated open hours it was closed with no information about when it would open.

Worth It.

The town is basically one long street.
But is studded with interesting shopping finds-speciality confectioners etc.
The old town is at one end,the steam railway and modern shops at the other.
It takes about 30 minutes walking between the 2.
Lunch hours are long and shops shut from 12 to 3pm in many cases and don't always
re open promptly.
The Joan of Arc section is easily found and signposted.
You can commune with the stones of her cell after she was shipped here from
Le Crotoy across the Bay.
The English were finally expelled from France in 1450.
Theres an old historic Abbey here too.
With much to read see and do.
It has a remaining imposing gatehouse and arch.
Cobbled stoned street and lined with creperies and cafes.
It holds attention for an hour or so.
The Abbey was open.
A local speciality is Saffron sirop and jelly that goes with Duck apparently.
You get handed a recipe leaflet if you buy some!

Discoveries on every corner!
paź 2017
We first came here to visit the local vet to have our dog ready to back to UK. It is one of the few vets who don't need an appointment.
We stay at "Le Walric" and walk into town. As you do so you rapidly become aware of the wonderful views across the bay but also that the place is steeped in history. At one time there must have been an immensely well endowed monastery, all that remains is the perimeter wall which is amazing for its size and the quality of the stonework, five times knapped flintwork, rolled stone pillars as doorways. Deep pockets!
Then into the old town via the Joan of Arc towers, fortifications and church, cobbled streets, arches, fortifications and remnants of portcullis.
Further on the more modern town comes into view with half-timbered houses, grand ornate twenties era houses, some on a magnificent scale: money no object.
Then into the port with its associations with William the Conqueror.
Great restaurants, bars, the little train, seal boat tours, guided walks, bike paths, the mariners chapel and great birdwatching complete a truly wonderful place.
