River Spoiled by Pollutants

The Tha Chin River is a distributary of Thailand's Chao Phraya River, branching off the Chao Phraya in Chai Nat Province. It then flows through Suphan Buri, Nakhon Pathom and Samut Sakhon before emptying into the Gulf of Thailand.

I saw the Tha Chin during a visit to Suphan Buri, both in Suphan Buri City and at Sam Chuk, further south, where a hundred-year-old market hugs the river bank.

Tha Chin is a river of many names, and as it flows through Suphan Buri Province it is known as the Suphan River.

Unlike the rivers that flow through other Thai cities, I found no evidence that people take advantage of it to establish riverside restaurants. The most I found was one area where there was a short riverside promenade and some street food stalls.

Further downstream, the famous Sam Chuk Markets hug the river bank, and are a well known tourist spot.

Unfortunately the Thai Pollution Control Department has reported that water quality in the river is seriously impaired with bacteria and nutrient pollution from phosphates, phosphorus and nitrogen, the results of run off from agricultural chemicals and wastewater discharge into the river from households and industry.
