Off-piste Palladio
kwi 2019 • Dla rodziny
This extraordinary villa, built by Palladio around 1548 for local landowner Bonifacio Pojana, is like no other edifice designed by this remarkable, groundbreaking architect. The design was inspired by the enormous baths of ancient Rome, which Palladio had studied on a visit to the city; hence the hall's barrel vault ceiling and the curious arches with circular insets (serliana with oculi) front and back.

The frescoed interior is delightful, from the 'grotesques' painted by Bernadino India - whose steaming vessels, damselflies and floating heads offer a weird visual interlude - to the more muscular depictions of warriors and Tiepolo-lite ceiling works by Canera and Zelotti. There are also vast wine stores in the basement and what might be grain stores in the upper storeys - but this monumental work was never finished. The curator was very informative (in Italian) when I asked innumerable questions - there's a slight air of surreality to this place that piques curiosity.

If you're anywhere near Vicenza, or staying among the Euganean hills or even along the Brenta - this villa presents a dramatic contrast to, say, the Villa Foscari.

Palladio on a Budget
wrz 2016
This out of the way villa shows the creativity of a genius architect constrained by a budget. The interiors are beautifully restored and maintained there is a nice gift shop as well. Normally there would be an admission charge but the young woman behind the counter at the aforementioned gift shop must have been on a comfort break so we were able to tour gratis. (We felt guilty and bought some t-shirts).

Well-curated, great opportunity to get a sense of Palladio's vision for the gentleman farming life. Close to fields and sky. Really instructive to compare with his other villas, about mid-range in grandness. Scratch one off the bucket list!

An interesting Palladio villa
kwi 2015 • Pary
Not as grand as some of his other designs, but still very pleasing to the eye and nicely situated in a natural setting. Some wonderful interior features. Currently being used for an art exhibit.

Worth a visit
maj 2012 • Pary
Interesting Palladian villa, unusual in style, with five occuli and a broken pediment. With frescos by Zelotti and grotesques (grotto paintings) by Bernardino India.
