Historic housing

A very nice and old dwelling place. You can walk through and have some chips near the waterside. It is hard to find a parking space.

Beautiful Old Streets
paź 2019 • Wyjazd w pojedynkę
What a beautiful place. It is so peaceful and the old buildings and cobbled streets make it feel like a very special place and I felt quite privileged to visit. There were so few people there which actually made it better. Shame that the church wasn’t open.

Begijnhof Lier is rather something for fans. You love it to see and visit old religious buildings or you don't.

Nostalgic and picturesque
lut 2019 • Znajomi
The beautiful beguinage in Lier is deservedly UNESCO world heritage. A very picturesque quarter in the city centre with small historic houses and cobbled streets. When you enter through one of the gates, you will feel like stepping back in time. A nice place to visit when you are in Lier. One tip : wear flat shoes for walking the streets because they are all cobbled.

Must see in Lier
sty 2018 • Pary
The Beguinage in Lier is a must see place which makes a lovely walk. The small dwellings along the narrow streets were originally homes were for unmarried women and run by nuns. They continue to be inhabited today.

Flemish Beguinage.
sie 2018 • Wyjazd w pojedynkę
Beguinages, or Begijnhofs, are to be found all over the Flemish country (that is Flanders in Belgium and most of the Netherlands) and have been granted a UNESCO Heritage stamp. These shelters were initially designed for unmarried women and run by nuns that would provide religious guidance. They were very basic dwellings, although very decent and very well looked after. The local chapel would be next to a plein or lawn, and from there several streets with small houses would sprawl. These typical flemish quarters have a very special atmosphere to them, and this one is no exception. It's best to do some research on the internet before visiting as very little infoemation is provided on the site itself.

Quaint 17-18th century housing originally meant for unmarried older women.
kwi 2018 • Pary
Like all begijnhofjes, it was meant for non religious (so not nuns) single women (“begijn”) to live in, together with other unmarried women, the last begijn passed away in 1994. It was started in the 13th century, the existing houses are from the 17-18th century. At that time houses had no numbers, so these houses were given all kinds of names, e.g. of Saints. It looks as if people actually live in these very small quaint looking houses, so I didn’t try to enter. Worth a short visit.

A must to understand the medieval city
sty 2018 • Dla rodziny
Such a beautiful site, the 'Begijnhof' where years ago religious women were living. And so quiet... a typical Flemish situation

Allow yourself to get "lost" in the village
paź 2017 • Wyjazd w pojedynkę
It is indeed a small town. It has indeed this narrow alleys and small streets. Just let yourself get lost on them. You can guide yourself looking upwards and following to top of the churches though! And wear comfortable shoes as the streets are all in stones! Explore, let yourself be surprised by little things! And go till the Nike Goddess!

Pleasant glimpse of an interesting lifestyle
wrz 2017 • Pary
There are quite a few of these beguinages in the Low Countries, and this is perhaps the most attractive we have seen, with its sets of houses around courtyards, rustic streets and alleys and working church. There's something appealing about these communities of woman who wanted to live a communal lifestyle halfway between the religious and secular world. A bit like a single-sex commune with a shared life - perhaps an idea that could make a comeback in the 21st century?
