Rude staff
lis 2020 • Pary
My partner and I would go to gawthorpe regularly on walks and never had an issue. One day the weather was extremely bad and throwing it down with rain, so me and my partner stood under a little bridge at gawthorpe where we have seen many people go , waiting for the rain to stop. A member of staff came and was extremely rude telling us that we weren’t allowed to stand there and claiming we knew it was off limits. Neither me or my partner knew this and there was no signs saying you couldn’t stand there. We both felt extremely embarrassed and anxious, and haven’t gone back since.

Great walk on any day!

Always walk around here.Lovely grounds which include a maze ,beautiful flowers, plenty of grass and even a ‘natural play area’ making it great for all ages! Can be enjoyed on a sunny or rainy day making it great for dog walkers or runners! It is very accessible as there is a car park with about a 3 minute walk to the hall ,or you could walk down the path from either the top or bottom entrance.Highly recommend!

Very large grounds for walking.
We did a house tour and found the staff to be super friendly and welcoming, with just the right amount of information provided in each room to make the visit interesting and bring a bit of history to life.
The textile collection pieces, including some temporary modern artwork, on the 2nd floor were well worth viewing

Daily walk

During these recent times, We’ve discovered lots of local walks and gawthorpe is one. The kids love exploring around the grounds, their imaginations run wild!. We’ve entered on to the grounds from both entrances. The one with the closed gatehouse, and the one further up which is now a house? Explored the small maze, which is at the back, the extensive wooded area too. All the little paths leading to the natural play area, the pond at the top, the wooden activity bit. It’s such a shame they aren’t able to go into the building right now as they are very excited to. They want to learn about the history of the building. It’s a beautiful place and really peaceful when you go later in the day. We can’t wait for it to re-open!

The Familiar Shuttleworths
lis 2019 • Znajomi
This place was the icing on the cake. With a visit to the area planned and a friend noticing a book in a top best seller list linked to the Pendleton witch trials, The Familiars, we soon made the connection with Gawthorpe Hall- Fleetwood Shuttleworth, the first mistress was indeed married into the family at age 13, having previously been married at 4! The referenced painting ( a copy) of her and her mother hangs in what would have been the old nursery. The Long Gallery does look to the woods- you just might spot a Fox.....

As new NT members we try and visit a different NT location in the north west each weekend. Yesterday was our first failure.

Firstly our satnav failed to find the correct location. The post code took us up a no entry road. We then changed sat navs and google on my phone took us round a housing estate. We realised later a van had been masking the poorly sign enterance.

When we arrived admittedly slighly later than we wanted to 1115 Sunday there were cars everywhere trying to park with no chance of succeeding we gave up and went to Whalley.

a memorable and especially enjoyable visit.

Visited Gawthorpe Hall today to see Alice Kettle's stunning immersive textile installation Thread Bearing Witness inspired and made by refugees and asylum seekers, exhibited as part of the current British Textile Biennial. Whilst there discovered a fascinating global collection of textiles put together by Rachel Kay Shuttleworth in the early part of the 20th century. Friendly well informed staff with a quirky sense of humour and entertaining flights of fancy added an extra dimension that made it a memorable and especially enjoyable visit.

First visit here, won't be the last! Didn't have time today to do an extended walk around the grounds. Enjoyed the stewards' comments about the house's history, its period features and former occupants. Amazing history and so well preserved. Nice tea room too and an interesting textiles exhibition to round off the visit.
