Nice ancient Amphitheatre
maj 2020
This is a fantastic Amphitheatre. It's very well preserved and taken care of. Not far from lovely Murten it's well worth a stop. You can visit and roam around free, no entrance fee, except if you want to visit the attached museum. "Thanks to" Corona there weren't many visitors and we pretty much had the place for ourselves. Throughout the year some plays and festivals also take place here. Surely a must-do when in the area. Free parking just next to it (northern end).

A really impressive amphitheatre!
wrz 2018 • Dla rodziny
Aventicum, now known as Avenches, was the capital of Helvetica and a Roman colony. It’s worth a visit, because the amphitheatre and Roman Museum are really impressive.

Opera in an amphitheatre!
cze 2018 • Wyjazd w pojedynkę
I went for Opera en Fête, and it was great. I was worried that by picking the open seating area, I'd have to sit on stone all night, but there were wooden bench tops that were slightly nicer than stone steps.

Amphitheater surrounded by ruins of a Roman city!
wrz 2017 • Znajomi
In our search to visit as many Roman Arenas as possible we happened upon Aventicum. Our Swiss friends arranged a private tour with a guide who not only showed us the amphitheater but other parts of this ancient city. There were thermal baths a theater and parts of the old city walls.Though not as large as the coliseum in Rome it housed the same activities and today is still used for concerts. There is also a small Roman Museum in a medieval tower next to the amphitheater that is worth a visit.

Switzerland's best preserved amphitheatre!
sie 2017 • Pary
Avenches (formerly Aventicum). Town was founded by the Roman commander Gaius Julius Caesar. Aventicum was the capital of Roman Helvetia. Roman amphitheatre in Avenches – Switzerland's best preserved amphitheatre, with the Museum, housing a precious collection of Gallo-Roman antiquities, including the famous gold bust of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Today, in addition to being a historical monument, Opera Festival and Rock Festival are held here. Cleanliness and tidiness. The total absence of tourists, during between festivals.

Roman amphitheater
lip 2017 • Pary
This amphitheater is now in the middle of town. Portions of the arena are used for concerts, so there may not always be access to wander the stands. Some of the structure has been modified through the years, with some sections of tiers being unusable. You definitely get the idea of the scale of things in Roman times.

Well preserved Roman arena
sie 2017 • Dla rodziny
When we were visiting the arena, they were building the stage for a festival, hiding most of the original Roman remains. Without the stage, the arena must look impressive.

Wanted A Clear Look at the Amphitheatre
sie 2017 • Znajomi
The day we arrived, the town was setting up for a rock concert in the amph so it was cluttered with sound stage equipment and grips. Bad luck. Love Roman ruins but saw nothing of this one. I imagined beauty under the modern equipment.

Very interesting side trip from Bern

Small quaint village outside Bern. An easy drive and pleasant time. I would recommend the Hôtel-Restaurant de la Couronne for dinner or drinks.
