About
The Ansel Adams Gallery is the oldest single family owned and operated business in the National Park system. H.C. Best, a political cartoonist and landscape painter, founded Best's Studio in 1902. His daughter, Virginia Best, ran the business from the 1920s, and married photographer Ansel Adams in 1928. They operated under the name Best's Studio until 1970, when the name was changed. Today The Ansel Adams Gallery houses a remarkable collection of Adams original photographs for sale and many exclusively available reproductions of his work. There is also a remarkable and eclectic offering of books, handcrafts, and other art forms. The Ansel Adams Gallery has been a leader in photographic education since 1940, and offers a number of half day photography classes weekly and week long workshops throughout the year.

Having seen an Ansel Adams exhibit at the MET in the late 1980s, I was so eager to visit this place. I was shocked to see that about 1/4 of the place had his photos while the rest of the place was like a glorified souvenir store, more than an actual gallery. I would visit again, though.

My spouse and I stopped here for a short time on our recent trip to Yosemite. The types of items they stock are not often seen elsewhere, in my experience. The current exhibition of winter photographs was interesting, as were the original Adams photographs. The building itself is beautiful, and the staff is friendly and welcoming. Overall the gallery makes for a pleasant Valley experience.

I was able to meet with Michael Wise and get a 4-hour private photo tour of Yosemite Valley. We started at 4:30 am so we could catch some sunrise shots and then he took me to several spots in the valley for some wonderful shots. He also knew a lot about my camera and gave me several tips for landscape photography. The spots we went to were off the beaten path and allow us to photograph shots that not everyone sees and in peace and quiet away from crowds. He also showed me several spots to visit later in the day when the lighting would be better at those spots. It was an extremely valuable experience and well worth the time and money.

My family and I visited Yosemite recently and we stopped by the Ansel Adams Gallery. I have enjoyed the work of Ansel Adams for many years. Adams was able to capture the beauty, mystery, and emotion of Yosemite in his photography. The gallery has a great selection of his work and serves as not only a place to purchase his works, but to learn about his photography. They have everything from postcards of his photos to fine prints of his work. I highly recommend a visit to the Ansel Adams Gallery.

My husband and I took a half day private photography tour with Moeryae, and we're blown away by how much we were able to learn in such a short time. I have just a smartphone camera, while my husband has a Sony mirrorless, and she was able to show us both how to use all the features on our respective devices, to take better photos. She did a lot of research in advance on settings, and it showed. I would highly recommend this tour for beginners looking for instruction, or even more experienced amateur photographers, looking to improve their shots, or even just find the best spots in the valley to take photos, based on season and weather conditions.

I booked a private photography guide for a full day. The tour started in the morning and we continued it at sundown. First the photography was wonderful. I had great lesson and day touring the valley.
I would recommend this tour not only to advanced photographers but beginners too.
Unfortunately this tour was held during covid so the museum was closed.

We were lucky enough to get Michael Wise as our guide for our 4-hour private photo tour of Yosemite Valley. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Michael was very good at communicating and moving our tour times. At the beginning of our tour, Michael spent time with us going over what we knew about our cameras, what we wanted to learn, and what our most important photo goals were. He was so knowledgeable on both our different kinds of cameras, was an excellent teacher to get better photographs, and knew just where to go to get the best light. Our time in the valley was very short and we were able to capture the beauty of it with Michael's help. We would recommend him to any of our friends. Thanks, Michael!

What a useful and delightful tour with staffer Blake Johnston! My wife and I were joined by our adult son who drove up to Yosemite to join us. Although we are experienced amateur photographers, Blake methodically showed us not only technical secrets of our iPhones but also pro photographer angles on how to get great shots in Yosemite. We had plenty of places to practice our new skills, while hearing fascinating tidbits of Yosemite and Ansel Adams history. We’ve taken many walking tours in numerous cities and countries - this was one of best ever.

We had the most fantastic guided photo trip with Michael during our stay in Yosemite. He was knowledgeable and a great teacher to both the keen amateur photographer and the iPhone user. He took us off the beaten track and was chatty and engaging. It was the highlight of our stay. No we just have to edit all the photos :-)

For those familiar with the beautiful black and white images of Yosemite National Park by early 20th century Ansel Adams, one of interesting places to visit in the valley is his studio. Opening hours 9am to 5pm daily.
Today, the Ansel Adams studio is an art gallery where visitors can find photo reprints of Ansel Adams as well as numerous other art related gifts. It is a nice shop to see even if you don't intend to buy anything.
Note - within the gallery you'll find a wall with history and images of Ansel Adams as well as information related to the establishment and running of his studio here in Yosemite Valley during the early days.
