Glorified Revisionist american high school history in a fancy building
kwi 2021 • Pary
What a disappointment, spent $20 for one ticket to wander around a small two floor museum to learn nothing new from a historical perspective except that a lot of people are enamored with a romanticized version of american history. It’s shocking to see so many celebrate war, murder, and the enslavement/torcher of humans for their own gain. There was a small sign explaining the Lost Cause of the Confederacy; the sign should be larger and at the entrance. It’s sickening to see museums using this ideology to justify the belief that slavery was just and moral, because the enslaved were happy, even grateful, and it also brought economic prosperity to the owners. What a disgusting world! God bless our souls.

Interesting Enough
mar 2021
This is a very comprehensive museum covering the Civil War chronologically from start to finish. I appreciated the presentation, and thought it did a great job fairly presenting the different aspects of the Civil War. There is a ton of reading involved. I enjoy reading, but by then end of our walk through of the main exhibit, I was worn out and a bit disinterested. To be fair, I've never been particularly interested in history or wartimes. My husband seemed to stay engaged and interested the whole time. We spent a couple hours walking through the main exhibit (much longer than anyone else we saw as we stopped to read everything) and then moved upstairs to the rotating exhibits - currently one covering the evolution of money and monetary policy and one addressing how the world would be different if the Confederacy had won. I found both of these to be incredibly interesting. Wish we could've visited the National Park/Historic Tredegar portion but it was closed due to COVID. The area around the museum along the river is beautiful and worth spending some time exploring.

Really Good Museum with Authentic Artifacts
mar 2021 • Wyjazd w pojedynkę
This is a really well laid out museum, which takes you through each year of the war as you walk through. Decent explanations of causes and attitudes. The authentic artifacts include the suit Jefferson Davis was wearing when he was caught after the war. It gives a good understanding basic understanding of the war for any budding scholars.

Great museum to visit
mar 2021
What a great museum to visit. We visited on a rainy day and it was perfect. Friendly folks. Reasonable prices. Right amount of information for us. Covid distancing and masks were in place, which we appreciated!

American Civil War Museum Multi-media Presentation
gru 2020
Easy to find on a Tuesday in early December afternoon with convenient parking covered by admission. Not an enormous museum on the scale of DC's Smithsonian museums, but one that leveraged knowledge of advanced technology and the passage of healing time. Wind through history and experience the war from multiple perspectives. A veiled slide show with voices of slaves was particularly compelling. Mid-way there is a video with a novel screen. Artifacts are artfully displayed and death/casualties with infographic techniques. The second floor had a well designed informative exhibit on monetary policies for the lay audience. The well stocked gift shop for civil war buffs or novices is on the first floor. For the main floor museum, we were the only visitors. Highly recommend.

A Yankee In A Rebel Land
paź 2020
This exhibit of Civil War artifacts is in a well deserved spot in the Tredegar Iron Works complex which served the Confederacy similarly as did Krupp did to Germany in both World Wars, namely their primary munitions and artillery manufacturer. This exhibit is sponsored by Dominion Energy is a venerable attic of artifacts. You can see personal effects of most of the principles of the Confederate States (CS) to include Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, Thomas E. "Stonewall" Jackson and Jeb Stuart just to name a few. While the artifacts are seemingly limitless, the presentation still is somewhat concerning to me. I understand where I was viewing this from, the former capital of the Confederacy and there might be some difference between my northern perception and the presentation. The exhibit basically leaves it up to the individual to decide on this war that has shaped our history and continues to do so. Recommend you also go upstairs to see the temporary exhibit on the the role of money and finance during the Civil War.

COMPREHENSIVE
paź 2020 • Znajomi
The museum does an excellent job of covering this troubling period in our Nation’s history in a fair, comprehensive, and accurate manner. The interactive monitors let you delve into each year of the war and key in on the significant events. The displays are excellent and accurately depict the ugliness of war and underscore the true reason for its happening. Well worth a visit and an important learning experience.

Good Look at the Civil War
paź 2020 • Pary
There are 2 Attractions here; The American Civil War Museum and Historic Tredegar, part of the National Park Service. We visited the first, the second is closed due to Covid.
The ACWM takes you through the timeline of the war from 1861 to 1865. It also personalized the war thru eyewitness accounts. On the second level is an exhibit on the creation of paper money in the USA and another which examines what the Confederate States hoped to achieve after they seceded.

Interest permanent exhibit
paź 2020
The main downstairs exhibit is interesting for adults and well done with a variety of exhibition techniques - video, interactive screens, static exhibits to read - help engage visitors

However, I found the two upstairs exhibits to be dead boring with a heavy reliance on placards to read; perhaps they did not want to invest in more inactive media for temporary exhibits?

The building itself is interesting with preserved brick and iron work.

Eat first or plan to eat later as there is no food to purchase at or near the museum. Parking is available onsite and if free with validation, so bring your ticket inside with you. And leave the kids home as they will be bored.

Not just Soldiers
wrz 2020 • Pary
Interesting artifacts, and liked that it was not totally about soldiers and battle tactics. Included info on NYC draft riots, life in Richmond, POW camps including Belle Isle, Naval blockade, etc. Nice interactive screens for the curious to see maps and read- doubling the capacity would be nice. Excellent collection of non-weapon items, especially the POW handicrafts. Special exhibit on Southern ambitions and plans was interesting. Appreciated old building preservation. Factual presentation that didn't obscure the ugliness surrounding the war, but avoided that self righteous Yankee tone one frequently encounters. That was this Yankee's opinion, anyway.
