We spent the afternoon one day just driving and walking through the old Avondale and Riverside neighborhoods. It is unique as you can take in a great deal of old houses and there is also an active business area with many things to do that also serves the locals. We spent several hours just looking at large, beautiful old homes from the bygone era. Some are now businesses, some are fixed up and some are not. It was very mixed and eclectic. If you are NOT an old house buff, then you might find it a bit boring.

This pretty neighborhood has many homes built in the early 20th century and a couple of areas with shops and restaurants. There is a walkway along the river in the north end of Riverside but otherwise most of the riverfront is blocked by private homes. You'll also find the Cummer Museum, the Saturday Market, and couple of parks.

I have been all over the world and lived in San Francisco for years. I've also lived in Riverside/Avondale on and off for years. This is by far the coolest, hippest and most vibrant walkable neighborhood in Jax. It's got everything you can ask for as far as food, drink, art and culture. PLUS, it's gorgeous! Historical homes and streets, live oak covered in moss, magnolias, jasmine, the St. Johns River, and great parks.
It has gotten super popular lately and parking can be a bear so get there early or take a cab or even public transportation, which is convenient in that part of town. Plus, on the weekends, the have a little trolley that takes people around.
There a 4 distinct areas of this part of town and they are all worth visiting.
5 Points in Riverside has over 10 eateries, pubs and shopping. Sun-Ray Cinema is in the heart of it and they show top movies and serve alcohol! there are 2 parks, one being the beautiful and historical Memorial Park on the river. 5 Points tend to be a younger and more hipster area than the other areas but not by much as everyone comes to Riverside. Especially for Art Under the Bridge and the Cummer Gallery on Saturdays!
Park and King is another up and coming neighborhood and it feels another pub or bistro opens every day! There are also antique malls and cool 2nd hand vintage shops.
Avondale is a bit richer and upscale with beautiful homes and parks, well worth strolling through. There is an awesome diner that has been there for at least 40 years, The New Fox as well as several good restaurants like Orsay, Biscotti's and Brick. Mellow Mushroom and Mojo also opened in Avondale. You can also get your Hookah and bellydancing on at Casbah Café. There's a bit of shopping too.
Last is Murray Hill which is a bit further west but has a great pizza place, billiards, live music venues and great 2nd hand stores, especially for furniture. It's smaller and less populated but Blue Moon River is worth the trip.
If you're stopping in Jax on your way somewhere else, Riverside is literally right off 95 and you won't be sorry you stopped. I recommend at least a weekend if you are visiting.

We were so stoked to go and see The Lion King at the Times-Union center and the opportunity to stay in Riverside at a quaint air bnb cottage only extended our experience. Everything in riverside/avondale is in walking distance with so many thing to do. From the wonderful restaurants, the parks along the St. Johns River, the Riverside Arts and farmers market (a must), Cummer museum...It is all there for you. Riverside is an eclectic area that ranges from funky young people, yuppies, old hippies, wealthy senior citizens, and everyone in between. Spend the whole time there or catch a short cheap uber ride to catch an event downtown. Will be back again.

We moved from gorgeous St. Augustine to this area ten months ago and couldn't be happier.
I'm originally from New Orleans, so the historic homes, tree-lined street, oak trees with moss and walkability remind me of home.
If you want diversity, you've found the right place. All are welcome here. Riverside is more bo-ho, while Avondale is more gentrified, but they're both eclectic and welcoming.
We are thrilled we moved to this area and love the idyllic setting, restaurants and people. Don't miss Jacksonsville's hidden gem.

Ok, I live here and LOVE IT but it is NOT a vacation destination. The neighborhood, built after the great Jacksonville fire, is home to an eclectic sort (which is one thing that is so endearing to those of us that live here). There are some good (and bad) restaurants, some great houses to drive by and it is very walkable. So, if you are in the area, have some extra time and are interested in old Jacksonville, stroll or drive through. I would not, however, go out of my way to make this part of my Florida vacation itinerary (and remember, I love this part of town).

I actually live in Jacksonville, Florida where Riverside and Avondale areas are located. This is a very walkable historic district that has beautiful homes, from bungalow to gorgeous mansion homes dating back to 1900. You will find independent restaurants (and yes a Starbucks)Brewtoriums and unique gift shops from gourmet and spice foods, ice cream, clothing stores. This area is about 2 square miles that skirt the St Johns River and two distinct shopping areas... You can easily make it a weekend from going from one area, to the other. You will also find a few Bed and Breakfast to make your experience feel like home. On Saturdays the RAM, Riverside Art Market takes place from 10-3, with food trucks, live entertainment, and local art vendors. Enjoy your time in the Riverside/Avondale area.

Visiting this neighbourhood is the number 7 ranked thing to do in Jacksonville? It is a fairly nice neighbourhood, but I cannot see how this counts as an activity. Nothing special here other than a couple of restaurants, ice cream shops and a couple of very ordinary suburban parks.

If you only see one part of Jacksonville, this should be it. From the funky shops and restaurants in 5 points, to the local breweries, and brew pubs of the Park and King area. Of course you have to visit the upscale shops of Avondale with its great restaurants and shops for every taste. Add to all this some of the best parks, and museums in the area, and it is a day or two well spent.

This is my favorite area of Jacksonville. I'm not a concrete jungle fan, I prefer nature preserves. But if I could pick an area to buy a home in Jacksonville it would Riverside. There are some lovely parks. I need trees. It is the artsy area. There are gorgeous historic houses. It has affordable shops & dining. I highly recommend this area for visitors.

Interesting question that I wish I could answer. I have no idea in regard to that in Avondale. I know that Saint Augustine has a lot of hunting but I don't know about aventail sorry I can't help you.

Hi Lisa,
I live in Pacific Grove, Ca. you may know it from you San Fran days. I want to move to a warmer less costly area and Im looking at Jacksonville area and Charleston. The Riverside area sounds great. How would it compare to P.G/Carmel?
Thanks so much,
Amie

Annie, How does Riverside Avondale compare to P.G/Carmel? well….here are some thoughts for you to consider. We have water. We have a rabid Republican anti-environment Governor who we try to overlook. We have a low cost of living: housing, food, entertainment are all very reasonable. We are friendly. Riverside Avondale was named of of America's Great Neighborhoods by the American Planning Assn. Riverside is the creative nexus of the city with most of the fine artists and craftsmen; it's the home of the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens and CoRK art studios; and the Sun-Ray Cinema (a 2-screen historic theatre that we love). We don't have a single golf course. We have the Riverside Arts Market every Saturday under the I-95 bridge on the river. We have sidewalks and front porches and like to ride bikes although we're an historic neighborhood with no bike paths. Within 45 minutes you can be anywhere in the 800 sq mile city including the beaches, the marshes, hundreds of miles of kayak waters, NFL football, excellent symphony concerts as well as monster truck rallies. And we have a lot of people who are working to achieve greatness for this city and you can be a part of that. How are we doing?

Avondale is a neighborhood, not a hotel.
