My nephew is in the Navy and took us on a tour. This is the largest Naval Base in the world. There were many ships docked and very cool. The commissary was awesome.

Tell people you're closed!!
wrz 2020
As others have said in the reviews since June, it would be nice if they, and the Visit Norfolk website, would post that there aren't any tours until further notice. Traveled to Norfolk to show my wife and daughter where I was stationed for 4 years. Only got to show them via the harbor cruise. We showed up a half-hour before opening on Sunday morning to the base tour site, because the Visit Norfolk website I was going by didn't say anything about them being closed. Waited for ~ 15 minutes, wondering why there were no worker vehicles or tour buses there, before we finally found this review site that said they were closed. Highly disappointed.

Military base

We are a military family. The base is huge. It is the largest military base around. You can take a tour around via boat. Many photo opportunities to take. Magnificent ships!

CLOSED

Because the tour operator does not post anywhere on its website that this tour is closed for COVID they get 1 star!
We drove 40 minutes to get to this attraction after looking at multiple websites that all say that it is open.
We would have not wasted our time and reserved the right to come back at a different time.

Nice tour of nava base by bus
mar 2020
This is a 45 minute tour of the facilities at Norfolk Nagel Base by motor coach narrated by an active service person.
Upclose, no photos please, of destoyers, aircraft carriers, subs, piers
Great view of the homes on base. Photo opportunities are ok thru most of the tour just not while in restricted areas.

For reference, the tour is at gate 5. We had difficulty finding the tour office and gift shop.

The review right before mine gave all the right and helpful info about the address and the cost so I'll add alittle other content. It was a 45 min bus ride, luxury 35 passenger mini bus, so very comfortable. There were no opportunities to get off the bus but we got fairly close to some aircraft and ships. Most sights were on the passenger side of the bus so def try to sit on that side. The driver used a mic but it stopped working so I'd also suggest sitting near the front. Our 2 year old found it entertaining to be on the bus and also to see the aircraft and ships so I would say it was child friendly but it's also important to mention that only quiet well behaved kids should go because a noisy rowdy one would ruin it for everyone on the tour easily. Also, when we returned, the gift shop was closed so you might want to get souvenirs beforehand. And lastly, call the day you go to make sure they are having tours. We arrived and found out that they decided to only do one tours that day, which luckily we got to do.

Interesting, Especially If You've Never Visited a Military Base

This bus tour originates at the Naval Base Norfolk Tour & Information Center at 9079 Hampton Blvd. (next to gate 5). Norfolk is the home of the world’s largest Naval Station and during this 45 minute guided tour you’ll see (off in the far distance) aircraft carriers, destroyers, amphibious assault ships, assorted and learn about the history of Naval Station Norfolk. It was pretty extensive but since we both had been there so many times, it was old hat. The cost (cash only) is $10 for adults and $5 for children 3-11, and senior citizens over the age of 60. A picture ID is required for all adults over the age of 18. Foreign travelers must present a passport as a means of identification. I recommend that you arrive 30 minutes early so as to allow time check your ID, sign you up for the tour, collect the tour fee, get a very brief description of the rules governing the tour and have an opportunity to explore their gift shop. Seats on the bus are on a first come, first serve basis. There are 5 tours daily, Monday-Sunday at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m., and 2 p.m.

The Naval Base in Norfolk is the largest in the US. I came here as a guest of my son, is in the Navy. There were two Aircraft Carriers and several other large naval vessels there, and barracks, office buildings, maintenance buildings, restaurants, and much more to see. We went into the Navy Exchange store, which is huge, even having it’s own food court.
