Don’t waste time and fuel following the road signs to Dunskey Gardens and Tea Room.
paź 2020
As Dunskey Gardens remain officially Brown Signed as a tourist destination I keep making the journey every few months to see if I can catch them open. I’ve been trying to revisit the lovely garden and tea room for at least 2 years but they seem to have permanently closed to the public without having the courteously to let the public know by having the road signs removed and removing the website. Really disappointing behaviour from a destination featured by Visit Scotland.

Closed... no sign of life

Lovely surroundings, and pleasant walks nearby, but when we arrived at the gardens, everything was closed and had been for some time. I’d checked both their website and Facebook page beforehand and neither indicated closure.

My daughters and I stayed in the bothy cottage on the Dunskey Castle estate and enjoyed the beauty of the rolling hills, bleating sheep, forests and beautifully worked fields. Every morning we ordered coffee and delicious treats from Magda in her coffee shop. We frequently walked through the amazing garden and green house. The variety of plants was a gardener's dream. There were hiking trails on this estate that led us to a large maze and to quiet small lakes. A very special place......

Travelling hopefully...........

I’ve visited the gardens a couple of time before and I was really hoping that this time it would be much better. I was to be disappointed. The cafe was closed but paid the money and went into the walled garden. As before, it is attractive with a pond, borders and greenhouses which you can go in. But as before, there is nothing unusual or different about the garden. It is too ordinary. The planting is ok but it is not exciting with not much in the way of inspiration to take away with you.
The larger grounds are worth exploring, but wear wellies if it has been raining. It can get very muddy!
Mental note to self: don’t bother going back again.

Gardens totally closed
cze 2018 • Pary
On the 9th of June we drove 50 miles to visit the gardens. We found many “private” and “no admittance” signs but no gardens. A sign on the main road warned that the tea rooms were closed.
I enquired locally and was told that no-one had any knowledge of the reason or whether the closure was permanent.

After a tour of the fine house the garden did not disappoint. The green houses (3) are in different condition. Hope you can get into the old stables we did.

A very beautiful garden indeed

We were privileged as a group of over 50 to be welcomed to Dunskey House which, generally I think, offers exclusive use, weddings and corporate events as well as self-catering cottages overseen and managed by the delightful couple who inherited it. So the house is a family home and the surrounding walled garden and woodland gardens the work of the onwer's step-mother. The gardens are wonderful and some of the greenhouses have been restored. The house itself is a marvel of its age and worth a visit if that is on the cards but I suspect it is for the guests.

Nice tea rooms
cze 2017 • Pary
Went here on a fairly wet midsummer day. Nonetheless the gardens were interesting, and there are extensive walks beyond the boundaries of the gardens themselves into Portpatrick through some lovely wooded areas.

The tea rooms are very nice with a very nicely painted 360 degree mural on the interior walls.

We were staying in a property on the estate so didn't have to pay the entrance fee so I don't know how much the usual entry fee is.

Tearoom closed on the September Weekend?
wrz 2017 • Pary
Ok appreciate the gardens but why is the tearoom closed on a holiday weekend? Spoke to another family who couldn't understand this either. It was their main reason for visiting.
