As to another place and another time. Seems very out of place. I understand why it is here. But we don ' t memorialize what happened in Cambodia and Rwanda So while conveying a moving and powerful message it carries a good bit of advocacy. Seems like putting an MLK memorial in rural Hawaii

We have visited several Holocaust memorials in the States and abroad. This one we found to be particularly compelling and extremely emotional and moving. As one was walking up the pathway to the curved stone memorial there were in brass personal possessions (a broken suitcase, a violin, a pair of glasses, a shoe, a book, a teddy bear, etc.) randomly strewn about of those victims being led to the camps. On the main memorial there were quotes and on the backside the names of many relatives of Jewish families living in the Portland area who perished in the camps. I spent far longer here than I had anticipated. The memorial offers much insight into this horrific episode of history and should be seen by everyone.

This memorial had me emotionally invested as soon as I walked up to the memorial and saw the bronze sculptures scattered on the path leading to it, it felt like items lost along the way by those who would utlimately loose their lives in the concentration camps, a child's doll, a violin, eyeglasses. The memorial itself gives an overview of what happened and includes worlds from those who lived through it from a child's perspective. The back of the memorial lists the names of those killed who have relatives in the Portland area along with their relationship to the survivor. The memorial is more than a block of stone, underneath one corner is burried ashes and soil from the largest concentration camps.

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it". Definitely worth a visit... while you're at Washington Park there are plenty of other things to do as well, so this can easily be added to an itinerary while visiting the park.

My husband & I were impressed by the message and the educational experience of this memorial. The creators of the Oregon Holocaust Memorial put a lot of thought and emotion into the design and building of this memorial. As a child of survivors, I urge others to stop and visit this Monument to remember those who were murdered by the Nazis and to learn the history of the Holocaust.

This was a very moving tribute to the victims of the Holocaust. We happened to see the signs as we were driving into Washington Park and decided to visit and were glad we did. We took the time to read all the inscriptions on the wall and found them to be very moving and thought-provoking.

The creators of this memorial were able to create an atmosphere of a museum under the open sky with just a few masterful strokes. Just look at the boot left by a child along with a teddy bear and you will experience this choking feeling in your throat. Sincere heartfelt art displaying inexplicably horrifying tragedy. Very simple yet very much to the point.

We visited the rose garden and then went to this memorial as my husband is very interested in war history. There is a lot of reading though completely worth it - it's a very humbling memorial. There is a lot of information that we didn't know, even having learned about this in school.

One of the most informative and inclusive memorials I have ever visited. Appropriately detailed examination of the forces that lead to the rise of the Third Reich, the dreadful chronology of historical events and dynamics in each country as Hitler swept through Europe, and the devastating effect of Nazism on its myriad victims whether they be Jews, Roma/Gypsies, gays, or various intellectual elites. Profoundly moving and very personal account of survivors and families in the Portland area. Tied as it was to the community, I found this perspective unique and a most poignant and moving memorial to the victims of the Holocaust. If they wanted to honour their murdered ancestors and they wanted us not to forget, they will have achieved both goals.

The bronzed artifacts gave the whole space an even more intimate feel.

Highly recommended, to pause and reflect, especially at a time when Americans are being encouraged to fear "the other".

This memorial took me by surprise. You are greeted by a cobbled walk, modeled after an old street in Europe. Then there are bronze sculptures, items left behind by those in a hurry…a doll, a suitcase, a violin. As you approach the memorial there is a large headstone on the right, where ashes from various concentration camps are buried. A powerful reminder that we must continue to fight for human injustice and never forget what happened during the Holocaust. Beautifully, artfully and powerfully done.
