Much less than expectations
kwi 2021
We have been to the Fort Worth Stockyard & expected a little something along those lines. We did come on a sale day but it wasn't very impressive. Pretty empty really. There are a few western stores and some restaurants. But I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to go here.

We took our sons here (10, 12, 14, 16) for an 8am cattle auction. Really a great American experience. Free.

My friends and I walked around on a non-sale day and we enjoyed seeing all the cattle as they were loaded in the chutes/pens. It’s amazing how big the area is..... I can’t only imagine going on a sale day (MON/TUES). We did see trucks loaded up for a 1/2 mile waiting to offload cattle. Definitely don’t miss this place.

Weekend trip to OKC
lis 2020
I went here on Sunday and it was sad to see all the cattle in trucks loaded to go to the auction. I didn't go inside the building but saw the line of trucks waiting to go in.

Imagine 9000 cattle at auction...
sty 2020 • Pary
My wife and I visited the OKC National Stockyard on a non-sale day in January 2020. It was very quiet and we were able to walk around unfettered.

We can only image how this place would be on a sale day, Wednesday a reported “up to 9000” animals are bought and sold.

We recommend you climb the stairs to the elevated platform (you’ll see it) and walk across all the pens. This is an interesting part of the city and well worth your visit.

Fun Shopping!

One of the few places that has a great selection of everything western. They staged a Western "shoot out" in the street while we were there and had a parade.

My wife and I look for unusual things to do while traveling. Our visit to the stockyard was a highlight of our vacation

We entered the auction arena and were greeted by the auctioneer. Several of the bidders spoke to us. It was amazing how fast cattle moved through. We met the auctioneer after his 1 hour shift.

Glad we saw the historical area

We went on a Friday when there was no sale. The area looks like its the old part of OKC. They have kept the street stores and things looking old and historical. The stockyards were fun for my husband to see.

One of the oldest stockyards - runs around 9000 head of cattle in a sale. Very historical - you can walk the catwalk and get a view from higher up. Still has red brick walkways. You could almost hear the cattle and the cowboys from the 1800s. Nice to get a glimpse of the past.

A Whole New World for us
sie 2019
This entire town has the look and the feel of a 100 year old Oklahoma City. Everything is deliberately maintained to hold on to, and savor, that old ambiance.

The Stockyards are the main attraction here. We visited this area on a Tuesday. Since we had read that the auctions only take place on Mondays and Tuesdays, we kept the time aside for just that. We had to ask directions from a few people to be able to find the Big Red Barn, but everybody was extremely pleasant and willing to help us out.

Once there, we walked on a pretty high Catwalk that extends over the stalls. From these bridges, we watched and video-taped several cows being herded into a particular room to be appraised, weighed and readied for their auction. Through a system of movable gates, the cows were guided into the auction house. We were then able to watch the proceedings of auctioning off the beef cattle to a variety of farmers. We just sat there completely mesmerized by the process. Needless to say, we did not understand a word of what the auctioneer was speedily saying, until a farmer explained it to us. That made it a little easier to comprehend what was happening after that.

Once we were done with the auction, we saw several transportation trucks waiting to pick up the animals. Holy Cow! They even had personalized license plates, like “Cow Taxi”, “Eat Beef” etc. etc. What an experience it was! Whew!

We recommend a visit to this place. Take in all the unique activities, check out the brick architecture, have a soda at Sarsaparillas, a cookie or a Mexican Pastry at the Horseshoe Bakery, window shop and browse around at the National Saddlery where they make custom ranch furniture, have a meal at Cattleman's Cafe, and shop at Langston’s for souvenirs, western gear, shiny belts with large buckles and embellished leather cowboy boots made for all budgets.

Wow! What a fun day we had in this quaint town. We truly felt like we had stepped back in time. We even met some wonderful real-life cowboys and cowgirls, and had some enlightening conversations with them. So glad we made this fascinating day trip to have the uniquely Oklahoman experience – filled with so much history and tons of intrigue for us city folks. We will never forget the sights, the smells and the gamut of feelings that washed over us. Amazing!
