Perfect!

Been travelling to Southend on business and for pleasure for over a decade. Somehow hadn’t found myself in this venue but made up for it on this trip. The COVID restrictions meant measures had to be put in place to maintain social distancing and this was managed very well. There were plenty of outside seating options to make the most of the great weather. Indoors tables were spaced well.
We had dinner one evening. Good choices of locally sourced produce and really tasty food. Drinks selections were very good.
All the staff were a delight. They couldn’t have been more friendly and always had a smile on the face. They were all great, especially Bunny who always ensured we got a table where we wanted. It was my bday while we were visiting and when calling in for a nightcap on the way home that day, took a seat for a drink and they delivered a specially made cocktail on the house. See photo. Exceptional customer service and well worth a visit.

Cocktails
sie 2019 • Znajomi
Visited today, 4 of us, had cocktails from about 3pm, spent in excess of 80.00 between us all, went to order another round at about 5.15 to be told they close at 5pm,no last order bell or any staff over to let us know, menu and signs outside clearly show open on a Monday later as they're offering 241 cocktails between 5-8pm, said to the staff to be told that offer finished at least a month before but they hadn't realised the offer was still showing, asked if they would still serve us from the main drinks menu as we didn't want the offer, said no, as the bar was closed and they had no ice either, very disappointed and although the drinks we had were nice, I won't be going back and won't recommend them to any of my friends

I originally came in half an hour earlier and gave up trying get a drink.
My friend was more persistent than me and we decided to enjoy a few cocktails from the 2 for £10 menu starting at the top. One I wasnt overly keen on, a cinnamon one, but the others were excellent. We also had food. I had a lovely fish cake to start, I am a big fan of fishcakes and this was delicious. My friend had asparagus which again was lovely. We both had a burger as mains, which is unusual for me but the Jenga chips were great and the burger hit the spot.

All in pretty good. I d definitely eat here again.

Grubby milk pot would be my only moan.

Gorgeous cocktails

Great range of quality cocktails- so more-ish! Not cheap but 2 for 1 deals at certain times during the week. Nice ambience too.

Afternoon tea
maj 2019 • Znajomi
Attending a hen party afternoon tea. We had to wait 50 mins before being offered a drink. Tea arrived 10 mins later. No sign of coffee or milk. Despite being booked for unlimited Prosecco we had to keep asking for it. The tables were so cramped we had to keep shuffling in and out to let people/waiters pass. Tiniest tea ive ever had with sandwich fillings almost sprayed on the bread. Small scones and very little jam or cream. With 3 mini cakes. Very expensive and very disappointing.

Good place to stop for a coffee or lunch
maj 2019 • Pary
Nice , sheltered views from the terrace . Lovely coffee and good service- much nicer than the chain coffee houses along the high street. Great for people watching , especially on a sunny day .

Some good beer on tap
mar 2019 • Wyjazd w pojedynkę
Disappointed with the standard of pubs in Southend while I was there, in the end I went in here just because good hotels with restaurants at least usually guarantee well-trained bar staff and properly kept beers. You don't go into a place like this looking for a cosy, social evening, though. Sure enough, the bar staff were distantly efficient and the beer taps spot on. I drank pints from the Shepherd-Neame-owned Faversham Steam Brewery, which were lush, especially the Whitstable Bay Red IPA, which has a touch of citrusy flavour, but subtly done, and glows ruby in the light. The Black Stout was a tad more bitter than I like but again was perfectly carbonated, with a creamy head and smooth mouthfeel. At last, I'd found some good beer in Southend! I had a burger here too, which came with enormous chips--it was decent, though not up with some of the best burgers I've had recently. I sat in the clean, comfortable, and well-designed front bar. The hotel corners the High St and the terrace above the esplanade. I'm glad it's being maintained in good condition as a viable business in modern Southend. It doesn't have the resigned shabbiness of the other bars I visited along the seafront.

My birthday meal
kwi 2019 • Pary
It was my birthday, and we decided we were going to celebrate it at the royal hotel, as it used to be very nice and special, however we arrived at 7.10 to find the ballroom completely empty, we had a lovely round table, with a great view, however on being presented with the menus, we were very disappointed, nothing to our liking, my daughter wrote a previous review, in which you said we had been emailed a menu, i'm sorry to tell you, but you are wrong, we weren't emailed a menu, we did ask the waitress, if there was another menu, we could look at, she went to ask, but was told no !!! You used to have steaks, but was told there was one steak left to share, really!!!!!
you might have a new great chef, with a new great menu, but is it the right one????
We have spent a lot of money in your establishment, and are very sad, this is the way we were treated, we might have been here 38 times, as you so say, but then, it used to be really good, but now, it's not, I always gave great reviews, in the past, as everything used to be good, check and see, but this time I have to be truthful and say how it was, and to be truthful, which I always am, it was awful, it wrecked my birthday

New Chef, Outstanding food
mar 2019 • Znajomi
We have always enjoyed coming to the Royal Hotel as it is a beautiful listed building with stunning views over the estuary.

The food has always been of a good standard but the restaurant kind of lost its vision over the last year or so experiencing in some dodgy reviews on trip advisor.

However, they now they have appointed Head Chef Harry Lumsdon who is an award winning young chef (Young Master Chef Champion 2016) who's talents are way beyond his years.

We came here last night (16th March) with friends for drinks and a meal in the beautiful upstairs Ballroom restaurant.

What can we say? We are passionate fish lovers so chose a lovely selection from the menu, everything from the Tempura Oysters, Monkfish, Scampi and Hake were sublime with lovely wine to accommodate, not to mention the mouth watering desserts.

You must give the Royal Hotel a try if you are a serious food lover, you will not be disappointed.
The Royal Hotel will be going places putting its name up there with the best eateries in essex.
