A well-restored plantation
lis 2020
This is adjacent to Pettigrew State Park. We walked among the many buildings, but did not take the time to do a tour of them. We personally found it painful to walk in the area of the slave dwellings. On a slightly more distance like, we went to the Pettigrew family cemetery where the slave owners are immortalized.

Thanks for leaving a review! We're glad that you visited our site and we hope you will join us again for a guided tour to learn more about the history of the enslaved and free persons who lived and worked at Somerset Place. Please note that the Pettigrew Family Cemetery, which is a historic burial ground, is part of Pettigrew State Park and therefore is not affiliated with our site.

We'll Worth the Short Trip Off US-64
mar 2020
We went with a group of friends on a a Tuesday afternoon. There was a tour in progress. The tour guide, Chrisa, graciously allowed us to join. She was a great guide. The tour was very informative. Throughout the tour she talked of the family who owned the plantation. More importantly she discussed the enslaved individuals by name bringing their humanity to life. It was very moving. Be sure to call ahead and go when tours are avaiilable

A hidden gem

A state historic site out in the boonies. Well worth the trip out of the way to experience the historic plantation site. A guided tour by a very good docent made it even more of a treat. Thanks Christa!!

Southern Plantation not white-washed
paź 2019 • Pary
This was at one time the third largest plantation in North Carolina, and over 850 enslaved people passed through, with over 320 at one time. If you’re looking for a tour where the slaves are referred to as “servants” and the plantation owner’s behavior is lauded as “better than most” or “like a father,” this one is not for you. The tour takes you first to the slave quarters and then later to the fancy big house. It was incredibly sad to me, starting with the business ledgers kept on each enslaved person (no mention of paternal lines because it didn’t matter) and on through the replicas of the Collins’ family portraits in the big house. Our guide was exceptional. As we left a busload of middle-schoolers was arriving which made me happy—I hope their history lessons are more truthful than the ones I got when I was in school.

Fascinating and Enlightening Tour
sie 2019
This is well worth the trip. What made our visit was the docent Noah, who seemed to have limitless knowledge and information, delivered well and very engaging. It is in the middle of nowhere and the town of Creswell appears to be in a sad state. You will learn not just about plantation life but about the history of the area and the Carolinas. Well worth the drive and it's free!!! (But you can leave something to help defray the cost)

Personalized tour of antebellum plantation life
paź 2018
What a wonderful historic site! A tour guide took us to slave quarters, hospital and big house - presenting an informed and interesting view of the complexities of plantation life.Tour guide was so educated on life as it was lived on the plantation- by slaves, non-slave workers and owners. An experience not to be missed.

Outstanding and Free to Public

If you love a guided tour, look no further. Somerset Place is mainly locked up except for during the presentations. However, the interpreter at this place is very good, telling the story of a Civil War era family and its enslaved community with facts and an admirable absence of judgment — just enough pathos in her communication to reflect well on her humanity. Wandering around the grounds afterwords was fun. Time your trip in order to catch the tour. Allow a couple hours. Pack water and prepare to drive for a good 45 minutes from edenton. Highly recommend this site.

Old plantation home and other structures in rural eastern NC near Creswell.
There is a visitor’s center, but the person in duty was with another small group on the grounds.
The old plantation home has been kept very well. The slave quarters are being restored and some are available to go into. Foundations exist where other buildings were in the past.
Interesting history.

Much info
sty 2019 • Pary
There is a lot of history and details known about this site. Some of the buildings are original: some are reconstructed and some just have the outline of their foundations. The staff was friendly and helpful. There is a 90 minute tour which we did not take but we did view the timeline and info displayed on a chart around a room in the Center. We then used the provided brochure for a self guided tour. The longest walk, about 1/5 mile is from the parking lot to the Center. The buildings of the Plantation are close together. As with other NC Historic Sites, there is no admission charge.

After extensive research, I was able reconstruct my family tree, for my fraternal grandmother. Although residents of Philadelphia, I was led from the north to Faunsdale Plantation and the Sommerset. The first in our tree to set foot on Amercan soil was Kiddy, who was transported on the ship the Camden. She was finally able to walk the paths of her ancestors. She made the trek at the ripe age of 91.
