Terrible staff! Disability discrimination.
kwi 2021 • Dla rodziny
Horrible experience. Rudest staff person I have ever encountered! I have a medical condition that makes it dangerous for me to wear a mask....the place was fenced off like a prison and the staff person was absolutely rude in regards to my disability and demanded to know what my condition was. I told him that it is my right to keep my medical information to myself and he proceeded to take my picture! I understand that some people are scared and don’t understand my disability, but this place and the staff completely ruined my trip. I sincerely hope they don’t treat others like they did me, but if they do, I hope they are not in business long or new, kind, smart management takes over.

Great COVID safe activity!
lut 2021 • Dla rodziny
A fantastic Covid safe kids activity! I took my seven-year-old and two-year-old to do some gem mining, and they absolutely loved it! The facility is very clean, and is very large. They require masks so we felt very safe while we were in there because it’s so big there’s plenty of room for people to spread out and stay 6 feet apart. My kids split a bucket of dirt and found a ton of little treasures! Chris, the manager, was super nice and very knowledgeable about all the different rocks and gemstones. I thought the prices were really fair given the experience that the kids get. Overall, a wonderful activity for kids!

Indoor gem mining
lis 2020 • Dla rodziny
Was in the area and the kids love to go gem mining. The first place we went to in Banner Elk was closed so we drove to this one. I was surprised when we arrived that it was in the Tanger Outlets. The store seemed brand new and very clean. They offer pre packages bags of gems or a big bucket that you can purchase that you don’t know what is inside (about $35).

Everything was set up nice for families to sift through the dirt and find the gems. That staff was extremely helpful and friendly.

Teenaged grandson gem mined for the first time!

He enjoyed doing this! When his bucket only revealed very small "gems", they gave him a 2nd bucket free! This bucket had many more treasures!

Quick service with lots of gems!

Thank you for the prompt greetings and minimum wait while packed with visitors! We had a great experience with tons of gems in both of our medium sized buckets. Our son loved it! Will recommend to our friends!

Got the COVID safety down
sie 2020 • Dla rodziny
I really appreciate how well this business handles things with the pandemic. They had a gate set up for getting in and out of the building and all staff wore masks. Our kids (7&8) were thrilled with the gems they got...one of the guides saw what they had from their first bucket and kindly gave them a second bucket to go through. They ended up with a good haul! The gems were identified by an employee with wonderful customer service. There are other gem mines in this area...I would definitely recommend this one. Check the hours b/c they are closed a few days during the week for deep cleaning, but I can’t remember what those days were.

Not great gems
lip 2020
We purchased a med bucket and were very disappointed. This is more for the children who just like to dig, but not for good gems or anything you want to get cut. They are not reviewing them with you at all. Small pebbles and junk.

Childhood dream came true!
lip 2020
My sister and I have long wanted to "mine for gems" and were determined to do so on this trip (age 59 and 65). My brother in law, age 67, was surprised how much he enjoyed watching us "mine". I looked over the website well beforehand to familiarize myself with all the options. We opted to do small "local" buckets, very reasonably priced. The set up was a bit unwieldy; I wanted to get my coffee first but there is a chain that a staff person has to unlink to allow people in, I suppose due to social distancing; but it could be irritating if you wanted to go in/out. They had the spacing well marked and reminded people where to stand to wait. I was pleased we were allowed stools when I requested we be able to sit down while mining. The flumes were outdoors but covered, which worked well on a slightly rainy afternoon. After we found our gems, we waited our turn to sit down across from a staff member, separated by plexiglass, and he explained (very fast talker!) our finds. Although all the staff members we saw were masked, we realized with horror after we left that our "gem explainer" at the end wasn't wearing a mask; although he was behind the plexi-glass, we were leaning in and if any of us had the virus or illness, it could have been a bad situation. He should have worn a mask like all the others. We enjoyed our mocha frappes and the price was fair. My family members also purchased various rocks/stones for a family member who collects rocks. The restrooms were indoors and very clean, with running water, flush toilets and soap. I expected a "hard sell" to purchase more expensive buckets or have our stones made into jewelry, but we didn't feel pressured at all--which is much more likely to make me a repeat customer. Also, be aware that if there is lightning within 3 miles, they shut it down for at least 30 min.

So cute! Definitely give it a go!

Our 1st gem mining experience and it was so fun. We got the local buckets (1 small bucket each) and it was only $25. You keep everything in your bucket and when you go to the counter after "mining" they lay all your findings out on a mat that shows you what they are. You can ask any questions and the employees will give you a little background on each of the gems you found. Such a cute place! We got a right good amount of gems out of our 2 small buckets!

The coffee is outstanding!!
lip 2020 • Znajomi
I had the best experience of my life here. First thing I did at Doc’s was getting a nice cup of coffee from their in-house barista, Brad. This young man is beaming with confidence, and he has the skills to back it up. He made me the best coffee I’ve had on this side of the Mississippi. Brad could single handily put Starbucks out of business. The next bright spot of my visit was Codi. He has a seemingly unlimited knowledge of gems. His passion for gems is unmatched and is evident when he is describing them to you. Furthermore, he has a natural swagger and attitude about him that makes it feel like you have been friends with him for years.
