Challenging trip, worth the effort :)

First of all I need to say we came from cold Europe and were not used to the hot weather yet, this made the trip so difficult for us :) Also we underestimated the trip back, which was mostly up the hill. Luckily there were enough streams on the route for us to cool down. Take enough drinking water with you.

Trip starts in Cilaos village, which was amazing and for some reason crowded with spiders. We haven’t seen any of them nowhere else on the island in such huge numbers. I was walking in the middle of the street looking down on the road, I was a bit scared :) Luckily when we entered the trail in the woods they dissapeared so I could enjoyed nature around. We went down the hill, crossed few streams, then again up the hill to reach final descend to the cave. Views were amazing. Once we reached the destination we spent a lot of time just cooling of in the river, eating, sunbathing. Local lady told us to go inside the cave and she went there even with us which we appreciated. We were not aware of the waterfall inside the cave. Be prepared for the cool water (20 degrees or less), swimming in a cave with blackness beneath you and walking in knee deep mud..or bat/bird feces :)) at the end there was a waterfall and you could try to swim as close as you can. When we left the cave we realized it is late afternoon, not much water left and long way back, uphill. It was amazing that even at 15:00 it was still 30 and more degrees, more on the sun. But hey, we made it and I think we will remember this trip for a long time :) When we entered the village again we were standing under the sprinkles from the watering of tomatoes in a garden and laughing with relief we made it.

Amazing experience, beautiful views.

belle randonnée

If in Cilaos make sure to thake this hike. It is mentioned in all guides and really one of a kind. You will have to wade through water up to your hip to get into the Chapel but it is breathtaking in there. The path isn't easy to find, mostly follow the left bank of the river.

prior to go, ask about the level of the river. take additionnal small shoes to walk in the river. when you arrive aside the cave, stay well on the left side, to find the path. afterward you will penetrate into the cave which is like a Church. continue walking into the water, and you will enjoy a wonderful cataract, don't forget to Watch the ceiling whit the big rock.

The walk to and from La Chapelle offers a view of some beautiful scenario. Then initial walk from Cilaos town is all down hill through beautiful forest. Crisscrossing a small stream several times as you go. After the initial descent there is a sharp climb on the shoulder of a ridge, along that and then down into the river bed. From the ridge you get a nice view of cave like entrance to the waterfall itself...it looks deceptive close!

Once down in the stream bed itself there is quiet an adventure of scrambling and climbing over boulders and crossing the river in places, shoes on and off several times. The final approach to the Chapelle entrance is harder.

Once there it's boots off and a wade through the stream to reach the waterfall itself...after a 2 hour+ hike and knowing the trip back is all up hill...I wanted a bit more from this waterfall, yes it's unique and nice, but , yea I wanted something bigger :-)

The walk back is pretty hard. Bring water and food, it's a good 4-5 hour hike all told. Take your time enjoy the nature!

Hiking La Chapelle
cze 2017 • Pary
Hiking La Chapelle is really amazing. Especially when the Mountain tops of Cilaos are in the clouds you still get good weather down at La Chapelle.
It's a fair hike of about 2 hours to get there (mostly downhill). The way back is a litle longer since it's mostly uphill.
Bring enough water and some food there are plenty of spots for a snack.
