Sense the Specialness!
lut 2021
Stoic, majestic, this place of worship exudes a tranquility and holiness from the front gate. It is a place to reflect as you can sit on several benches in the garden area. Situated in the middle of the hustle of a vibrant town, the church offers a sanctuary for everyone.

Easy to see why Georgia O'Keefe and Ansel Adams were inspired
gru 2020
Easy to see how this beautiful New Mexico Spanish Colonial Church inspired artists like Georgia O'Keefe and Ansel Adams to capture its unique charm. With clean adobe lines and huge buttresses, it is an architectural and spiritual gem.

Built between 1772 and 1816, it is the only original church which remains intact in the Taos area. As an active place of worship, the parishioners and the community members gather annually to re-plaster the historic adobe church. Known as "The Enjarre" or "The Mudding" of the church, volunteers mix an authentic blend of clay, sand, straw, and water into a thick mud paste. Layer by layer, the paste is applied from the top to the bottom of the church and then buffed with a sheepskin to reinforce the walls to be a resilient barrier to withstand the elements for another year.

A bit tricky to find as the church is tucked away off the main highway, but definitely worth a visit.

Big, not as impressive as I had hoped.
lip 2020
Went here because of Ansel Adams and Georgia O’Keeffe. I probably should have spent more time but family in the car was tired. It’s a neat building that cuts a stunning backdrop with the blue skies, but I didn’t quite feel the same power that the artists just have.

Interesting-Architecture

Interesting from the massiveness of its construction and you can still see the straw used in the adobe glinting in the sun.

We visited only because it was noted in AAA TourBook.

I wouldn't put it in the must-see category if limited on time. For many, probably best visited on the way into or out of town since it is miles out of Taos center.

Stop and see why this was a favorite of Ansel Adams, Georgia O'Keefe, Grant Pecoff and others
mar 2020
Located just 4 miles just south of the town of Taos, 100 yards or so off the highway. Stop to see why this was a favorite subject of many artists, including Ansel Adams, Georgia O'Keefe, Grant Pecoff and many others. Truly a spiritual place. Photos not allowed inside, but no problem taking all you want outside. Worth a drive from Santa Fe.

Holy Ground

This is a special place - not just as a religious site but also for its significance in the history of painting and photography. Beautiful Spanish colonial architecture with massive adobe walls. The interior is stunning.

Closed
lut 2020 • Dla rodziny
We went on Saturday of Presidents weekend and it and all the shops around it were closed. Lots of people in parking lot wanting to visit. I had looked online before hand and saw no info on the closure.
The outside of the building very disappointing. The photos I had seen online were much better than the real thing!
I’m not sure I would bother to go back.

Religious History Comes Alive
lut 2020
The simple beauty of this mission church, in many ways, is a testimony to the humility of St. Francis & the spirit of unadorned, kind-hearted faith. A visit to the church made me want to go back to experience a mass. Even without being religious, it's a joy to experience the endurance of history in this adobe church, a beautiful contrast to overly decorated cathedrals.

Historic Saint Francis Church in Ranchos de Taos
gru 2019 • Dla rodziny
We were in Taos for the holidays and decided to visit the historic Saint Francis Church in Ranchos de Taos. We also visited the gift shop and purchased a few souvenirs. The church is beautiful inside and out and we were able to take a lot of photos.
