Pleasantly Surprised!
paź 2017 • Dla rodziny
No one in our party of five had been to the opera. But it was on my uncle's bucketlist, so we saw "Don Pasquale. It was really good. This was a great "first" opera. The story line was easy to follow and the singing as amazing. I will say the orchestra stole the show. They were so good!
The Ordway was handicap accessible which was nice (walker and bad knees). My only compliant was lack of parking. The garage was a couple of blocks away and it was raining. But I pre-bought a parking pass ..which I recommend. Our seats were in the Mezzanine, slightly obstructed view, but really not bad. The tickets were only $25 a piece, so the obstruction really didn't bother us.
If you've never been to an opera, I think the MN Opera is definitely seeing at least once!

Great opportunity

Most years my wife and make a visit to the Minnesota Opera at the Ordway Theater in St Paul. It is always a great evening. The season is short - five operas presented. Usually one or two very familiar operas, a couple of standards and at least one modern production. I'm more inclined to the modern opera. but they are all very well staged and professionally performed. If the opera is less well known and is not selling out the tickets will be discounted a couple of weeks before the performance. If you have ever wondered what it was like to go to an opera the Minnesota Opera at the ordway is a great place to start.

Outstanding!

The 68 HS string players were entranced by the innovative seating of the very large orchestra on stage. The staging was minimal but worked perfectly. The singers and players were engaging and kept my students interested. Wagner's Das Rheingold was entrancing.

Great Opera!
lis 2015
MN Opera is exceptional for a smaller metropolitan area. Operas are presented at the Ordway in St. Paul, not in Minneapolis. Productions are expertly staged and the singing is outstanding. I prefer the more traditional operas, but newer operas are presented each season. I am a season ticket holder and encourage anyone residing in MN or visiting to check out one of the operas presented between Sept. - May each year.

For many years the equal or better than most Regional Opera Companies in the US

Opera in the Twin Cities could always be a mixed bag. When we moved to Minneapolis in 1969, Minneapolis hosted the longest stay of the Metropolitan Opera yearly tour. And there was the St. Paul Opera, good but tattered. The Met stopped touring, the St. Paul Opera disappeared and we attended opera any other place but here. With the advent of the Ordway Theatre in St. Paul, the Minnesota Opera's current performance venue, we were tempted back, I think five or six years ago, perhaps more, and what an eye (and ear) opener. The orchestra was a reasonably large and very talented group well conducted. The voices were often ones we have heard in Santa Fe or in Europe, the productions world class. With the engagement of Michael Christie as Music Director a few years ago, this is the complete package. The new opera initiative has resulted in some marvelous new operas, one of which "Silent Night" won a Pulitzer Prize. We have rarely been disappointed by the performance, staging or voices and have had the opportunity as well to hear some rarely performed operas such as Lakme and a lot of the "war horses". We subscribe to the five opera season, and last saw Carmen this past April. We were not disappointed, nor will you be when you attend. (We noticed one of the reviews decried a lack of bathroom facilities at the Ordway. this is quite puzzeling. This performance venue has excellent bathroom facilities, amongst the most plentifull we have experience in opera houses, concert halls and theatres throughout the world.)

Worth the time and discounted price.

My husband and I enjoy opera, so we attend the Minnesota Opera when we can. This past year, we bought season tickets for their opening night performances. I can say that all the singers and orchestra musicians do a fabulous job! They are very talented and are truly professional musicians. The sets are usually quite well done, too. We have just been disappointed when we have seen opera debuts, as this year's debut had music and a plot that were awful. The musicians did what they could with it, so it was really the composer and librettist's fault. We also were not please with moving "Carmen" into the 1970s, as it seemed so strange with those costumes. However, every classical opera work we have seen, we have enjoyed.
I also suggest to buy less expensive tickets in the Gallery. This way, you do not pay as much and you sit higher in the theatre. The English translations are shown above the proscenium arch, so this way you can see the words to understand the opera while looking down onto the stage.

Bathroom shortage
The opera Carmen itself was wonderful. The venue, Ordway theater in St Paul, provided totally inadequate bathroom facilities for the women. I used the ladies' room during intermission and the line of women had to be at least a hundred women long possibly as many as a hundred and fifty ...you couldn't even find the end of the lines. They snaked around like airport lines where there are petitions to hold people in. I totally missed opportunity to have a food or drink during intermission. All the women were complaining.

Some performances can be wonderful, but others completely miss. Hard to predict. Worth a shot, but don't go in with high expectations in case you stumble on a bad performance.

Always serious, always well-staged
lut 2014 • Znajomi
I've only been to a couple of their productions, and have been impressed by how seriously they take their work. The artists are committed and persuasive; the staging can be startling, but effective. You may leave shaking your head, but they will give you some stuff to think about for months, if not years, to come.

A Magical Magic Flute
kwi 2014 • Znajomi
The Magic Flute was innovative without losing the essence of the original opera. I was a bit disappointed in the singing of the Queen of the Night.
My only disappointment was I failed to listen to the music adequately. There was so much visual activity and wonderful singing, my senses failed to pay attention to the music.
