We ended up going to Eagle Island on a seal watch cruise. We hadn't even seen the blurb about visiting Eagle Island so we weren't aware of the stop there. I have sled dogs here in Vermont and have read many books on arctic exploration so I'm very aware of Perry's exploits. I found the tour of his old family home and island to be extremely interesting and a wonderful surprise. We used the self guided tour which provided a lot of information about Perry as well as his family and the home that he built there on Eagle Island. The island itself is beautiful.

The trip to Eagle Island to see Admiral Peary's home is not to be missed if you are in the area of Freeport, Maine. It's a beautiful island and there's lots of information on Admiral Peary and his family. The two volunteers were most helpful and enthusiastic. There's an audio guide to the house. We took the Atlantic Seal trip with Captain Ring - highly recommended.

We had an incredible afternoon on our Eagle Island adventure. First of all, the Atlantic Seal Cruise with Captain Ring defined everything we love about being in Maine - real, down-to-earth, kind and absolutely made in the USA. We saw seals and pulled lobster pots on route. Don't bother sitting aft...head to where the action is all the way forward and catch the briny ocean air. You can hear him better, too. On Eagle Island, the volunteers could not have been more inviting and interesting. One actually lived with the Pearys for a month feasting on seals and rabbits. Admiral Peary's home has a player piano that rocked the house with american tunes from yesteryear, an incredible fieldstone fireplace that is an absolute work of art, a haunted closet, a cool peephole, and incredible artifacts including a polar bear. Magical pathways, tons of butterflies and birds...Get out of the material shopping world and have an incredible adventure in Casco Bay...you won't regret it!!

After a short ride out from Harpswell's Dolphin Marina on the Marie L (there is a fee for the excursion; we paid $30 per person), you reach the dock at Eagle Island. When the tide is very low, as it was during our visit, the walk up from the dock is quite steep; the island is not wheel chair accessible as a result. Once on solid ground, you'll be greeted by Park Service employees and volunteers, and you are invited to watch a brief movie about Peary, his family and the island. Actually quite interesting.
Then you spend a couple hours exploring the house and the island. There are many, many items which belonged to the family; the house remains furnished as it was during their residence. And there are also items which harken to the explorations Peary took to the North Pole with his sled dogs and associates. The visit is well worth your time if you are in the area; and you will likely see osprey and possibly porpoises on the ride out and back. Captain Micah of the Marie L was readily available to answer questions about the islands in the area, pointing them out on a chart in the wheel house.
After the trip, make sure you grab a crab roll at Erica's. In a grilled buttered hotdog roll, plump with meat, it's the best $9 you'll ever spend.

Eagle is a wonderful spot to enjoy the natural beauty of Casco Bay. Admiral Perry bought this island for $300 in 1880, and his family gifted it to the state in the 1990s. The place is well kept, and there is a ferry boat from the Dolphin in South Harpswell that can take you if you don't have your own boat. Only accessible by water, no cars, very reasonable. For a little taste of what life on a little Maine island would have been like 100 years ago, you should add this to your visit to the area. Enjoy it!

So we met the van at 9 am "Coffee by design " which is in LL Bean on Main st. in downtown Freeport ,Me. Short drive to the dock to go out with Captain Pete on the "Pamela B" at 9;30 am . A nice clean boat with shade or sun your choice ,you can fill your water bottle on the boat.
45 minute trip to Eagle island ,Capt Pete gave a very good talk on the history of the
Islands and showed us all many points of interest.
Once on the island ,an 18 min video showing the history of Admiral Peary was shown in the visitor center .Some water to purchase there .The home is self guided but there are staff to answer questions.Nice big home with lots of artifacts .We took the hike around the island 1 mile ,some great narrow coast trails and beaches to walk.
There are picnic tables and great views everywhere .There is a composting toilet on the island. We spent 2 hours on the island which was just the right amount of time .
I would recommend the Seacoast tours.Very smooth operation !!

Took a boat from the Dolphin Restaurant. Definitely worth the trip to see the house that was Admiral Peary's house.

This is wonderful place to visit. We kayak out that way and have taken several visitors there. The history is amazing and the museum is staffed by wonderful local people, who are doing what they love. A must see if you can there.

We finally visited, and are so glad that we did, what a lovely home/museum on a beautiful island. The audio tour was good, learned much more about Admiral Peary then I ever knew. Their are walking trails, flower beds and a beautiful view in every direction. The docent was enthusiastic and informative, thank goodness they have dedicated volunteers preserving this historic landmark, they should be very proud of their hard work in an out-of-the-way museum.
