We love hiking here with our dog. The trails can be very busy at times, but if you go off peak then things are much quieter. Note that parking at busy times can be very limited.

The trails themselves are well kept. They are easy to follow and have good markings. You can't get lost. Well you could, but it would be hard. There are several hikes off the trailhead. Most rise pretty quickly and afford great views toward Boulder and the Front Range. All the trails are generally easy.

As I said, the trails are dog friendly. There's a clean bathroom at the trailhead. There's even a sunscreen dispenser.

Did a short hike (1 hour) with 3 small children and a teen. They loved it. Plenty of parking. Picnic tables and clean restrooms at the entrance. Loved all the bunnies and wildlife (apparently some people behind us came across a rattlesnake so we have to take the road (not the trail) back down the mountain.

This is a great place to hike. We really enjoyed our day here. During the late spring to early fall, bring a walking stick and keep your eyes open and pets close. There are rattlesnakes in the area, so be aware of them if you come up on one.

I go here often to mountain bike. On the weekdays it is not typically very crowded and mostly hikers. If the lot is full you can usually park on the road. Recent rains have made it even more rocky, but it is still not overly technical, nor too long a climb. Only around 4 mile round trip for the loop. It gets quite a lot of exposure so it can be hot in the summer, but also rideable in the winter.

Barely out of town, an open space with trails to walk on. Trails are not always super smooth, but walkable. Great place to take dogs on leashes. Feels like getting back to nature. It is not flat, however. It goes up and up and down and down. If you turn around you have the same thing. Up and up and down and down. We walked for 45 minutes each way. Extremely invigorating and peaceful to the eye and soul.

This place really does feel way off the beaten path, but it's very close to Longmont, and almost in Lyons. I LOVE the view toward the south as I'm starting the trail. Once you get up the trail, the views are nice toward the east and south. Anyway, I like this hike and have been several times, mostly in the winter so I can stay cool. That's the negative part of this area for me. You're out in the wide-open, so it's a really hot hike in the summer with the sun beating down on you.

The Rabbit Mountain open space includes three trails: Eagle Wind, Indian Mesa, and Thompson Overlook. We visited four times in October and November 2015, and on each occasion we had sunny skies with temperatures in the low 70s.

The Thompson Overlook trail is two miles out and back, and probably has the most relief of the three trails. There is a spectacular view to the north of two hogback ridges exposing the Paleozoic and Mesozoic sections.

The Indian Mesa Trail is 4.4 miles out and back, and follows a dirt road that ends at a property line. There is a nice view northward, but this is probably the least impressive trail of the three.

The Eagle Wind Trail follows a cliff along the north side, with views into the Front Range and the Cemex limestone quarry in the basin. This trail is a two mile loop.

There is a trail map available, and the trails are easy to follow. The hikes are not particularly strenuous, but sturdy hiking shoes are appropriate as the terrain is rough, especially over exposed bedrock.

On three of our four hikes we encountered yearling rattlesnakes basking in the sun directly on the trail. The rattlers at this age were about 10 inches long, and don't have rattles. We had our dog with us (leashed), who stepped over a snake before I saw it; they blend in extremely well. None of the snakes was aggressive, although move quickly when disturbed by foot vibration. Rabbit Mountain was formerly known as Rattlesnake Mountain, so the snakes are no surprise. Our dog didn't notice, or didn't pay attention to the snakes. We met a county ranger, who told us that yearling snakes don't meter their venom very well, so there is a considerable risk even from small snakes.

Rabbit Mountain is easily reached, and we have enjoyed all the trails. There are portable toilets at the trailhead, but no other amenities. There is no significant shade, so dress appropriately, bring sunscreen, water and snacks.

This one gets you city to trail just 10 minutes west of Longmont. Gorgeous easy hikes with 3 choices of 2.5-3.5 mile trails. Recommend Eaglewind Trail for first visits but after doing one trail last time we had to do another and logged about 6 Ike’s combined. Easy hiking but DONT let the little tykes run ahead of you! This used to be named rattlesnake mtn and people didn’t go there for that reason. Rabbit Mtn much friendlier but o d of our 4 visits had us going off trail around a rattler that was going to Stay on the trail and stood about 2 ft high . So no dogs or kids ahead of you and pay attention, but worth it!! Nice picnic table or two under cover at parking lot w outhouse too. Photo of scouts hike.

This hike has beautiful views (especially in the spring), is more of an easy hike for beginners, and has good parking!

Rabbit Mountain provides a fabulous location for day hikes within Boulder County. The views of the front range are incredible. Go early to beat the heat! Every once in a while, elk push down and bugle in the autumn.

Please PLEASE stay on the trail - there are rattlesnakes in the area. While they do cross the trail, most bites occur when people cut across from one trail to another.
