The river bank along the Huangpu has been elevated to prevent flooding (ala New Orleans style) but they took the opportunity to make the banks along both sides of the river into a park along which you can almost literally walk from the central business district to the far suburb of Minhang. Along the river are several ferry stops that for 2 RMB you can go across the river. Go far enough past the Nanpu Bridge and you will see the former Worlds Fair site, the old power plant (there are two, a small one, and the much larger one, both decomissioned), the further away from downtown you get, the larger the parks get, and the remains of the old port are well preserved as mute testimony of the cities past (and present) importance as a seaport. The city has done a fantastic job with this underrated attraction.

We visited the Huangpu River on a tour in August 2019. We had an option of taking a cruise on the river to enjoy the night lights on the buildings beside the river. The cruise went for approximately 1 hour. However, we chose to take a walk along the river and watched the same night lights from the river banks. Whether you choose to take the 1 hour cruise, or take a stroll beside the river, it is worth the time and effort to see a lovely light show. There are plenty of spots along the river to view the lights, and from the river banks, you can also see the cruise boats lit up as they float along the river. The bonus is that you're not confined to a crowded space. Very enjoyable evening.

Huangpu River, also known as Huangxiepu or Chunshen River, is a landmark of Shanghai, separating the city into two parts, Pudong and Puxi. With a total length of 113 km. It is nice place to walk especially at night.

This river carries the history of Shanghai, a magnificent city. Every tourist in Shanghai would want to visit the Bund at least once during his/her stay, and thatā€™s where one could see and feel the beauty of Huangpu River. The bridge on the north is called Wai Bai Du Bridge, Chinaā€™s first modern bridge.

A nice experience. A great view of the illuminated buildings on the shoreline.

The river cruise took roughly an hour. We stood up for the whole trip taking (far too many) photos.

There are toilet facilities on board, and donā€™t forget to take a jacket or jumper as it can get a bit windy.

From the highest bookstore in Modu, 239 meters above sea level, we viewed Shanghai's famous Huangpu River. The beauty of the river can be better appreciated from this vantage point than by its shores.

The river cruise docks are a leisurely stroll down The Bund, where many boats are available for boarding both day & night from the Shilipu Wharf.
We took a evening 1 hour cruise for Y100. The evening cruises depart every half hour from 6PM till 830PM. Some also offer dinner for additional cost.
Once you arrive at the boat docking area, walk down the stairs on the street side of the promenade, which lead underground (under the promenade).
The 1 hour (no dinner) cruise can be purchased at window #4. Disreard the guy wearing a phony uniform who will attempt to lead you to the ticket window for which he is emloyed (which is more expensive).
If you are unsure of which cruise you want, an official tourist information ofice is immediately next door to the ticket windows (they speak english).
This is not something that requires pre-booking, we showed up 10 minutes prior. It is well worth it if the weather permits. You will get excellent views of both the Pudong business district & the Bund.
The longer cruises are not worth it and in my opinion, I would eat elsewhere.

We were enticed into taken this one hour might time cruise of the river area in front of the World Financial Center, Shanghai.
We paid our guide 150 yuan per person. When we received our tickets, the price was blacked out, but just holding the ticket up in the light , it was easy to see the number "100". Strike one!
Now onto the boat, which departs of the Shiliupu Ferry Terminal. Once on board, we moved to an upper open deck for a better view, but if you tried to go to the upper most deck, the crew had the stairs roped off. If you wanted to go to this deck which had seating, the Informal charge was another 20 yuan. There was no receipt given for this charge as this was something set up by the crew. If you did not want to go to the upper most deck, you had to stand on the deck just below the upper deck. Strike Two! On this deck the front was open and there was a lounge area with seating in an enclosed structure. This area was also roped off so no one could not go into the lounge or even walk around it to reach the bow. Same deal, the crew wanted 30 yuan if you wanted to go to the bow and you could also use the lounge. Strike Three!
So if you like being taken advantage of, then by all means.
Better alternative, just walk the promenade along the river. It is well lighted, lots of places to sit facing the river and it is free. Take all the pictures you want.

Shanghai is a city separated by the imposing Huangpu River (the main river in Shanghai), an impressive tributary of the Yangtze River (emptying into the East China Sea).
Taking a river night cruise is a relaxing way to have a panoramic view of Shanghai (where the west meets the east), with spectacular light shows and views of historic and modern building/skyscrapers, sensational.
The River is used for shipping, drinking water, tourism, fishing, drainage etc, and has numerous tunnels and bridges.

You can book your river cruise from several places along the Bund, where you will then take a bus to your boat. The cruise we chose was Shanghai Scenery 3 and lasted for 1 hour (+ approx half an hour transfer to the boat). There are other options, 2 hours should take in both Nanpu and Yangpu bridges (1 hour takes in neither, but covers all the other sights of interest) and 3.5 hours takes you up to the junction with the Yangzi river and back. There are also evening cruises available.
For the bargain price of 50RMB each our 1 hour cruise headed out along the historic Bund and beyond, for half an hour then returned along the banks of the Pudong area, taking in the newly developing and ever changing sky-line of this rapidly growing city. There was an English commentary, describing the main points of interest, however, as we sat towards the back of the boat, we could barely hear it. Refreshments were also available on board, however, we did not sample anything from the menu.
