Ten minutes walk from the Sapporo Station.
Quite interesting, there is an information center near by the main entrance. The visitors can get a campus map and tourist information from the center.
The campus is gorgeous. There are historical buildings, beautiful lawn and trees, especially the famous Gingko Avenue and Elm forest.
Another must visit place is the Hokkaido University Museum.

November is the best season for autumn leaves. This morning we are strolling along Hokkaido University's ginkgo avenue for the beautiful deep red and gold foliage.

In comparison to the campuses we experience in America, this is not anything special. If you just want to walk around, it's fine. For a university campus, I was underwhelmed and disappointed. Not very colorful or unique.

One of the larger campuses in Japan, the grounds are popular among Asian tourists. Domestic tourists come for the small bust of Joseph Clark, the first president of the college and a symbol of Japan's late 19th century modernization.
Cherry blossoms draw picnickers in late April and early May. Colorful foliage lures tree-peepers in autumn, particularly the avenue of ginkoes at the North 12 entrance. As the temperature falls, the ginkoes burst into golden yellow, and Japanese oldsters collect fallen ginkgo berries to eat in late fall. The famous popular promenade took some typhoon damage in 2004, but it still draws sightseers.
The campus is a prime birding spot. Watch for nuthatches, pygmy woodpeckers, bul-buls, wagtails, bullfinches and Eurasian jays at Ono Pond.
The grounds are home to a small museum of science and history. Cafes and gift shops are found on the southern border.
The campus is a 10-minute walk from the north gate of JR Sapporo Station, or a 3-minute walk from Kita 12-jo Subway Station (Nanboku Line).

The botanical gardens on the Hokkaido U campus is a pretty little destination in the heart of the areas tourists visit. The 400 yen ($4) is worth it for your 30-60 minute visit. These aren't the meticulously maintained formal Japanese gardens you may have seen elsewhere but the ethnobotanical garden with specimens used by indigenous Ainu is interesting, the museum with stuffed animals is kind of cool in that they are displayed as the would have been in Victorian England, and the small Ainu Museum has some artifacts that are rare (and a gruesome but interesting video loop of a bear ceremony performed in 1935).

Best to ask for correct directions to walk after you exit from subway. Just said "Hokkado University wa doko desu ka?" and from their hand-signal you can guess which direction to go. Small park just after entrance is filled with pre-school kids and their teachers. I guess there's a childcare nearby. Buildings are not quaint nor impressive.

Ran around the campus early one morning. Nothing too endearing of this campus. However, there was some beautiful fall foilage on the trees. Other than that, it was somewhat ordinary.

Every my trip to Sapporo I like to come to Hokkaido University Campus. It is very nice to walk there especially in the evening. There are lot of trees, springs, birds, beautiful buildings and very friendly students.

I find that this place is dull as students cycling and walking around look like they are not enjoying their university life, no sophomores or juniors having raucos fun or party.

I visited the campus on 16 October 2019.
The gingko tree leaves are still in their green colour and have yet to turn fully yellow; guess the end of October is the best time if you want to catch the peak of the autumn season in the university campus and on the gingko tree avenue.
Suggest to go on weekends or towards the evenings if your schedule is flexible; weekday mornings tend to be a bit busier as cars and students/staff are streaming into the campus, hence taking away a bit of the romantic mood of the spacious campus and greenery.
Suggest to visit the Poplar Avenue and the Gingko Tree avenue. The Poplar Avenue is at a quiet corner of the campus, pretty deserted and quiet, go there to see the row of tall Poplar trees that line the path. At the time of our visit, there were no major events in the campus, so it can be a nice, slow walk in the evenings or on weekends especially since the campus is a jogging area for locals and students as well.
The nearest subway station is Kita Juni Jo on the Namboku line. After leaving the station, it's a short 5 minute walk to reach the Gingko tree avenue. The Poplar Avenue is a bit further away, which would take another 10-15 minutes walk from the Gingko Tree avenue.

Hi could anyone tell me if the autumn leaves are worth seeing around the 1st October to the 12th October?
Or is it too early to see the colours of the leaves then?
Thank you

A little bit early, I guess. My friend came on 18th.Oct last year: good timing and earlier than usual. Usually late in October. It depends on though. And I'd like to mention Nasty Smell. Warch out the nuts !!
所以3/5~3/10還是看得到金黃色的銀杏大道嗎?

This is a wonderful place for autumn leaves, especially the Gingko Avenue. There are cafeterias and restaurants in the campus.
Do I need to make reservation to visit the campus? If yes, how do I do it?

No need, you can just go to the Hokkaido University
The information office is close to the main gate. It is open during the office hour
