A gem

This is a landscape park five munites' drive from downtown Vyborg built by Ludwig Heinrich von Nikolay, a German poet born in Strasbourg who spent major part of his life in Russia, changed his faith to Orthodoxy and became Andrei L'vovich. He arrived in St Petersburg in 1769 to teach logic to Grand Duke Pavel, the only son of empress Catherine the Great and her heir apparent. Having ascended the throne grateful Pavel appointed him president of Imperial Academy of Science - the position he occupied from 1798 till 1803.
The emperor also granted him an estate near Vyborg, the new owner named it Mon Repos (My Rest/Relaxation/Comfort) and turned into a place of stunning beauty. He died and was buried there, on a tiny isle called - what else? - Ludwigstein. His son Paul (Pavel) , Russian ambassador to Denmark, built a chapel there calling it Ludwigsburg and the isle also got a name of Island of the Dead. All descendants of the first Nikolay were buried there.
The park prospered in all its splendor until 1944 when USSR took these lands from Finland. Soviet communists, naturally, expropriated it, turned its main estate into a sort of vacation home for local military, then into a nursery school and then in 1989 there came a fire and that was the end of it. Just ashes and ruins. No-one cared. And - yes - Ludwigstein was completely plundered, all crypts and graves desecrated and owners' remains thrown away - favourite commie entertainment.
Thanks God, the first ever comprehensive overhaul of the complex is taking place these days but the flip side of it is digging, axe striking, chainsaw squealing, dump trucks driving and dusting, etc., etc., etc.
But if you still have guts to visit the place your impression will be overwhelming. That helter skelter is not omnipresent so further parts of this huge park are still tranquil, serenely beautiful and peaceful. Go to Väinämöinen playing a kantele (do not know who the guy is? let it be a small secret), to Chinese bridges, huge moss-covered Wiborgite granite rocks, admire still waters reflecting skies, breathe in pine fragrances and just enjoy all these miracles.
Some practical moments. 1. Avoid week-ends and holidays - too crowdy. 2. Do not try to park your car by the ticket kiosk - they won't let you do it anyhow plus there's a spacious parking place about two hundred meters further on; it's just hidden by the landscape. 3. Take with you something to eat - no chance to buy anything serious when in. 4. Cycling is prohibited there - for good reason: major pathways have already been or are being paved by cobblestones or granite paving stones which makes use of bycicles, kick-scooters and even baby carriages (the latter two are allowed, by the way) a dubious pleasure.
To make a long story short, strongly recommended under any circumstances and in any season.
They claim to finish their works by New Year, en passant.

Парк на реконструкции. Многолюдно, дорожки перекопаны или закрыты, много строительной техники. Лучше проведите время в центре Выборга.

Park is under construction, It’s crowdy in the park, some pathways are closed, a lot of construction machinery around. Better spend your time in the center of Vyborg

beautiful northern park
sty 2020
I visited the park in the midst of the winter season. On a frezing Saturday morning I was at the gates of the park. I was alone in the park during my visit. It was freezing cold. But the cold weather gave a special feeling to the park. I walked and walked and took a lot of pictures.

Everything under construction. Hopefully they get it built soon. Will be a geaorgeaus park! Nice paths and beaches. I wonder why swimming is prohibited. Not much to see yet.

Beautiful park, well-done restauration on-going
sie 2019
Beautiful park to visit already now, only ca 2km from the city center. Monrepos Park is being thoroughly restored but can already be visited (the small island bridge wasn't there, but many parts of the park could already be visited). The shores and the landscape is calming and you see many different types of visitors - joggers that pass quickly and families that take time to admire the flowers. The Neptun temple has been rebuilt 1999. The sun was shining and it was relaxing to walk around and wonder how people used to walk and visit the park 100 years ago. Next time I'll bring some picnic and enjoy an even longer stay.

Loved it

The park is close to the city center and it’s easy to get there on foot. Fresh air, lots of huge stones, mesmerizing landscapes.
Another positive thing is that there are massive renovation works happening in the park right now. It will look even better pretty soon.

Very calming, relaxing and ambient

There's a great restoration happening in the park this year, it's planned to be completed by spring of 2019. By that time the park will be restored "to its peak condition", as it was back in XVIII century.
But even today this park is one of the most wonderful landscape parks in Russia and in Northern Europe. It is very secluded, but since it's pretty narrowly stretched along the shore, it is difficult to find a place where you would be alone. Still, it is quiet and you can enjoy stillness and ambience.

Massive restoration work
sie 2018 • Znajomi
A lot of restoration work going on, limiting access to many parts. Temporary concrete roads, and a lot of heavy traffic. Many rough clay fields. Not worth to see now, but will probably be very nice when everything is ready. We had looked forward to see the park, but were disappointed.
