Very beautiful monastery
lip 2019 • Znajomi
In a certain distance from the city, beyond its northern outskirts, a picturesque rock towers above the Great River, which has been called Snetnaya since ancient times. The name was given to it by a snetok (whitebait) — a small commercial fish that went into the wide bend of the Great near the steep shores of this limestone mountain in shoals. Here, in a convenient and beautiful place, already in the XII century there was a large monastery. In the XIII century domes of churches climbed one of the richest monasteries of Pskov - Snetogoskij.
The main temple of the monastery, is the Cathedral of the Nativity, built in 1311, well enough preserved to this day.
Frescoes are of great artistic value. The paintings decorated almost all the surfaces inside the cathedral and the niches of its facades. The fate of the picturesque heritage of the ancient Pskov masters in the Snetogorsky monastery is similar to the fate of the paintings of the Mirozhsky murals: in the 16th century, after fires and destruction, the colorful wall images were whitened, and partly covered with plaster, and until now have been hidden under multilayered lime films. Randomly discovered, opened and cleaned fragments of frescoes with great force convey the character of the Pskov monumental painting. Now in the cathedral there is an active restoration of the frescoes.
To the north of the cathedral are located the ruins of the Church of the Ascension with the high octagonal bell tower above it, which dominated the whole district.

This little monastery (nuns) is located just at the border of the town, accessible by own car, taxi but also by public bus. It's a nice place to visit and I highly recommend it, but maybe not among the top 5 sights in and around Pskov. The place is rather modern in the meaning that the buildings are restored and the chapel is located inside what feels like a rather modern building. The altar piece is however very beautiful and looks older than its surroundings. The grounds are pretty with nice gardens and trees and the ruins of the old church. Women need to both covers theirs heads and to wear a long skirt, all which can be borrowed from a small dressing room next to the entrance. It's ok to wear long trousers under the borrowed scarf/skirt. There is a nice souvenir shop inside the building with the chapel. A good value shop too. A recommended, peaceful stop to do.
