About
September 12, 2009 in Yaroslavl, a monument was solemnly bear, but not simple, but as a symbol of the city. The monument was erected specially for the year to the milestone anniversary (1000 years old town - the legend Yaroslavl was founded by Yaroslav the Wise in 1010). In Yaroslavl, there are other sites that involve the bear, but if there's portrayed just the bears, there is the sculptor was given the task to bear was ferocious as possible. According to historical chronicles known that Yaroslavl was built on the site of a pagan settlement > According to legend, at the time of the attack on the village, came to the aid of the Gentiles bear (or rather bear) and Yaroslav the Wise personally killed the bear, thus making it clear that none of the gods and their assistants will not save the village. After that the village board adopted the Yaroslav the Wise, a settlement on the site of a fortress was built. It was only in 1777, when Yaroslavl was founded viceroyalty, the bear came out of the legends in the arms of the city. To achieve maximum effect from the monument to the organizers recorded the bear's roar, and now from 9:00 to 21:00 of the monument to hear angry, I can even say a terrible roar of a bear. Near the monument is a plaque, a warning about this. Although it is not the first pillar, which I meet with sound, but that was an awesome sound, it is the first time. Monument in Tomsk Fortunately, there seems to be something he is also singing a certain phrase or loses, I do not remember. And monuments mobile phones seem to announce the time and show SMSes. In general, the lack of wonders, but the roar I like best, such as hard and viciously, and without the languid sweetness. The monument was erected next to the museum-reserve is at the intersection of Pervomayskaya and Nakhimson. But the bear's roar clearly audible in all areas of the Epiphany, so that when you're in Yaroslavl, do not miss it.

We were in the process of trying to find the church that's on the back of the 1000 rouble note when my husband decided he would tempt fate and "ask a local" where said church is located.
The local he decided to ask was both enthusiastically helpful and enthusiastically drunk. When we finally managed to explain what it was we were looking for, he began to spout directions that were detailed, if not exactly clear. He also marked three disparate points on our map with an x.
It would turn out later that exactly NONE of these points were the church that we so ardently sought. Later we would find the church on our own.
We did take one of this guys recommendations though, and that was to rub the nose on this bear monument; according, apparently, to local traditions. A plaque near the bear informs that the bear even roars every hour on the hour, but we were never near him at the correct time, so I can't vouch for that. Anyway, the bear is super cute! You should go.

This is a good thing to check out, not for historical value but just a touristy, memorable thing to do unique to Yaroslavl. It's right in front of a restaurant/bar. If on foot and looking directly at the front of the monastery, it's down the side street to the left, on the corner. The bear does roar on the hour which is a nice humorous touch.

Do not come to this bear expecting a spectacle.
But do come for a masterclass in Russian kitsch - the anticipation of the roar, the roar itself, the ad that follows the roar - it is breathtakingly silly.
We have enjoyed the awkwardness of the whole experience tremendously!

It's a metal statue of a bear on the rock, in front of the Pivovar restaurant, which has a connection to the legend of founding the city of Yaroslavl (its founder met a bear and fought with it). The statue has a sound system installed and every full hour it roars. We spotted quite a group of people coming there to watch it. It's funny and different, interesting to see. It's on your way to most main sights.

Small cozy street. Small monument, small bear. A point to visit and go to the next door beer restaurant.

I liked it. Can't spend 2 hours there, but the artist did a very good job, and this is worth stopping and walking around. Bear is important in the mythology of the beginning of the city: a grand founder of Yaroslav killed a bear with an axe, and then got the respect of the locals.

Nothing special actually, not worth spending time to look for it. A bear on the stone on the street.

Came across this whilst walking and found it interesting. Not necessarily something I'd seek out but a good photo opportunity.
