A good insight into Yaeyama culture.

This compact museum packs a lot into one large room and covers the Yaeyama islands' history from prehistory through the Ryukyu kingdom to Japanese rule. It contains mainly artefacts of everyday life, from stone axes to a rush mat loom. The most eye-catching are the boats that face you as you walk in. Some original Ryukyu government documents are held here, having escaped the obliteration that befell those in Okinawa in WW2.
A photocopied information booklet in English is provided, as are laminated info sheets beside some exhibits, but these cover only a selection of what is on show. At ¥200 admission it is a bargain, and well worth a visit.

Worth a visit while exploring Ishigaki City

This is another time warp local museum that the Japanese seem to specialize in. It's really rather small, with only two lobes of large room off the entry comprising the entire museum. Having said that, we spent a surprisingly long time examining the exhibits.

While most are still only in Japanese, the museum has invested in summaries in English that at least give you context. More importantly, photography is allowed which facilitates translation of key parts of descriptions which have not otherwise been translated. I found the exhibits of historical artifacts, in particular, the pottery, quite interesting given similarities to those created in other parts of the world.

The admission price is not much more than a chilled beverage.

Worth visiting

This relatively small museum helps give you insight and knowledge of the history and culture of the Yaeyama island people. It only takes about 45 minutes to view. There are English guide books next to the exhibit cases which provide fairly detailed explanations of the exhibits

We found this museum to be excellent and crammed with lots of history with excellent displays. There are English cards to explain the displays. Well worth a visit.

Jam-packed with great stuff

This museum is small but packed with stuff, and has excellent, detailed English information (in bound books that you can walk around with). This island/region was one of the only parts of Okinawa not destroyed in WWII, so their collection has original items. Fascinating items tell the story of the Ryukyu kingdom generally, as well as about the Yaeyama islands. Don't miss this museum!

Lovely small museum

I second other comments from TripAdvisor visitors. The museum is small, really only two medium size rooms. But it is packed with interesting bits of Ishigaki history. To its credit, there are explanatory notes in English in each section with details of items on display. They are simply laminated pages displayed on a music stand. That shouldn't be so important, but Japanese museums have a poor track record providing multilingual information, so Ishigaki Municipal Museum's effort is to be praised!

Visitors will find historical tldbits not discussed anywhere else. For example, human bones found when building the new airport were 15,000 years old, indicating there have been habitants on these islands much longer than previously thought. The museum also displays many household items and tools used by fishermen, farmers, and households.

Interesting area history

This is a small but interesting museum. There is information written in an English guide, with pictures and illustrations. You can match the picture and write up, there are quite a variety of artifacts, from various time periods giving a glimpse into Isigaki's past. Definitely a good way to spend a bit of time. 200yen entry fee
